Człowiek jako osoba społeczna potrzebuje w swoim życiu obecności innych ludzi. Pragnie kontaktu, aprobaty, dotyku, miłości, czyli ogólnie mówiąc psychicznej i emocjonalnej zależności. Mając świadomość współistnienia, bycia podmiotem, a nie przedmiotem zainteresowania, człowiek ma poczucie spełnienia w życiu. Jeżeli powyższe kryteria nie są spełnione, człowiek ucieka w samotność, która z czasem urasta do rangi problemu. Ma poczucie istnienia wśród ludzi, ale brak możliwości lub umiejętności wchodzenia z nimi w interakcje powoduje tak zwaną samotność w tłumie. Jeżeli jednostka nie potrafi sobie radzić w realnym życiu, często ucieka do świata wirtualnego, gdzie jest anonimowa i aprobowana bez względu na wygląd, stan materialny, wykształcenie. Dlatego obecnie tak wiele osób spędza mnóstwo czasu na portalach społecznościowych oraz używa komunikatorów do porozumiewania się z innymi.

Loneliness is a complex state, experienced in both the emotional and social terms. The weakening of the emotional ties with one or more persons does not allow for selfesteem, causes loss of meaning in life. If a person does not take your self-realization, directs his life on other people and the environment. It is uncommon that many people left the social life in the real world and the virtual reality of the Internet turns out for them better and more interesting life, full of colors and friends. Virtual communities can sometimes resemble the real ones. For some, the Internet is a parallel world in which they sometimes perform more functions than in the real world. Low cost, high efficiency and multimedia nature of the information provided on the web facilitates a rapid development of various forms of social life. In this paper the reasons and the effects of the use of social networks by a large number of people were discussed. The types of social networks, most commonly used by Polish users and the risks associated with them were also presented.
