Thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics of X-ray irradiated pure and doped with Sm3>/sup>+ ions Li2O–MO–B sub>2O sub>3 (where MO=Z sub>nO, CaO, CdO) glasses have been studied in the temperature range of 303 to 573 K. All the pure glasses exhibited single TL peaks at 382 K, 424 K and 466 K. When these glasses were doped with Sm3+ ions no additional peaks have been observed but the glow peak temperature of the existing glow peak shifted gradually towards higher temperatures with gain in intensity of TL light output. The area under the glow curve was found to be maximum for Sm3+ doped glasses mixed with cadmium oxide as a modifier. The trap depth parameters associated with the observed TL peaks have been evaluated using Chen’s formulae. The possible use of these glasses in radiation dosimetry has been described. The results clearly showed that samarium doped cadmium borate glass has a potential to be considered as a thermoluminescence dosimeter.

Post-recoil thermal annealing study at different temperatures for different intervals of time of the recoiled isotopes 169Yb, 175Yb, 177Lu, 166Ho, and 153Sm resulting from the nuclear reactions 168Yb(n,gamma)169Yb, 174Yb(n,gamma)175Yb and 176Yb(n,gamma)177Yb → 177Lu, 165Ho(n,gamma)166Ho, 152Sm(n,gamma)153Sm, respectively in different organometallic compounds Yb(OCC(CH3)3CHCOC(CH3)3)3, Ho(OCC(CH3)3CHCOC(CH3)3)3, (C5H5)3Ho, and (C5H5)3Sm were carried out. The thermal annealing behaviors of 177Lu, 169Yb, 175Yb, 166Ho, and 153Sm were found to be different in the compounds under investigation. The differences in the patterns of the obtained isothermal curves were discussed. Depending on the post- -recoil thermal annealing manner the reactions taking place during thermal annealing were suggested.

The absorption spectra of lanthanum, praseodymium, neodymium and samarium complexes with bromopyrogallol red have been studied by 1-3rd derivative spectrophotometry. Conditions have been found allowing separation of lanthanum spectra from other investigated ions. The following wavelengths were applied for measuring values of 1-st derivative signal: l=672, 666, or 664 respectively for lanthanum determination in the presence of praseodymium, neodymium or samarium ions and l=686nm for the determination of these ions in the mixtures with lanthanum. The Beer's law is obeyed in the range 0.2-3 mg Ln/ml. Detection limit is 0.05 mg/ml for La. The procedure allows determination of La in two compound mixtures of selected rare earths with satisfactory results.

Badano możliwość rozdzielenia widm absorpcyjnych kompleksów lantanu, prazeodymu, neodymu i samaru z czerwienią bromopirogllolową za pomocą spektrofotometrii pochodnej 1 - 3 rzędu. Znaleziono warunki, w których możliwe było rozdzielenie widm kompleksów lantanu od pozostałych badanych jonów. Następujące długości fali wykorzystano dla pomiaru wartości sygnału 1-ej pochodnej widma: l = 672, 666 lub 664nm dla oznaczania lantanu w obecności prazeodymu, neodymu lub samaru oraz l=686nm dla oznaczania tych jonów w mieszaninie z lantanem. Prawo Beera spełnione jest w zakresie 0.2-3mgLn/ml, limit detekcji dla La wynosi 0.05 mg/ml. Procedura pozwala na oznaczanie mikrogramowych ilości lantanu w dwuskładnikowych mieszaninach wybranych pierwiastków ziem rzadkich.

Metodę HDDR (hydrogenation, disproportionation, desorption, recombination) stosuje się do otrzymywania drobnokrystalicznych proszków materiałów typu RE-M (metal ziem rzadkich-metal przejściowy) o właściwościach magnetycznie twardych. W pracy badano wpływ zawartości Sm na właściwości magnesów Sm-Fe-N uzyskiwanych metodą HDDR, z uwzględnieniem zmian temperatury rekombinacji, tj. najważniejszego z parametrów tego procesu. Opisano wzajemny wpływ obu wymienionych czynników na strukturę fazową i właściwości magnesów.

Hydrogenation disproportionation desorption recombination (HDDR) method has been used for the processing of rare earth-transition metal (RE-M) powders with hard magnetic properties. In this study the effect of Sm content on the properties of HDDR processed Sm-Fe-N magnets versus recombination temperature has been analysed. The influence of both these variables on the phase structure and magnetic properties is presented.

Sm2Fe17-nitrides and Sm2Fe-17-carbonitrides, which have the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 type structure have been synthesized and studied by XRD, SEM and magnetometry. A coercivity of 2.1 MA m -1 has been obtained for Sm2Fe17N-3 powder prepared by HEBM, and a simple one-step mechanical grinding of Sm2Fe17, with organic ring compounds has been used to produce an anisotropic powder. This study demonstrates that formation of an anisotropic Sm2Fe17(C,N)x powders by mechanochemical reaction between Sm2Fe17 and organic ring compounds has a significant potential for the synthesis of powders in an economic method. These materials show intrinsic coercivities, JHc up to 0.55 MA m-1 at room temperature.

The Sm2Fe17Nx magnets were produced using heterogeneous diffusion and gas nitrogenation of 25% Sm-75% Fe mixture of powders. On decreasing the grain size to 0.97 micrometers the anisotropy constants K1 and K2 increase to 1.4 MJ/ cubic metres and 0.93 MJ/ cubic metres, respectively. Angular dependence of the coercivity can be understood as intermediate between the nucleation model and curling mechanism. On the basis of the domain structure observations, intrinsic magnetic properties were calculated. R
