Kickback risk of portable chainsaws while cutting wood of different properties: laboratory tests and deductions

Portable chainsaws are associated with substantial risk and can cause serious injury to operators, especially during kickback. This paper presents new results from research and analyses conducted regarding the impact between the different properties of wood on this occurrence. In an open area, such differences may include: wood species, humidity, temperature and the facing angle of the wood fibres in relation to the kerf and shape of the wood surface that comes in contact with the tip of the guide bar. This paper investigates chainsaw kickback including the research results on kickback and wood-cutting energy, saw chain speed and the efficiency of the chainsaw engine. It also presents conclusions drawn from the tests that can be useful for chainsaw users, showing the dependencies between the different properties of wood and the risk of injury.

W artykule przedstawiono autorską procedurę oceny zagrożeń mechaniczno-fizycznych zabawek aktywizujących, na przykładzie huśtawek. Omówiono wymagania formalno-prawne, uwzględniając zapisy nowego wydania normy PN-EN 71-8:2012. Zidentyfikowano zagrożenia związane z właściwościami mechaniczno-fizycznymi huśtawek oraz wyspecyfikowano kryteria ich oceny. Zaprezentowano metody i zakres badań właściwości mechanicznofizycznych. Przedstawiono przebieg badań huśtawki. Zwrócono uwagę na potrzebę wykonywania badań zabawek aktywizujących, jako niezbędnego elementu oceny ich bezpieczeństwa.

The author’s procedure for assessment of mechanical and physical hazards caused by activating toy on the ex ample of swings is given in the paper. Formal and legal requirements included in the new edition of PN-EN 71-8:2012 Standard are discussed. The hazards associated with mechanical and physical properties of slides are identified and the criteria for their assessment are specified. The methods and scope of testing the mechanical and physical properties is presented. Also the testing procedure for slides is given. Attention has been drawn to the necessity of testing the activating toys as the indispensable element for assessment of their safety.

Portable chain saws are still very dangerous machines. Reduced prices of these machines mean they are widely available to people who like DIY (do it yourself) and professionals. Kickback of chain saws is extremely dangerous for the operator. This paper discusses the results of laboratory investigations of combustion chain saws. The tests were conducted on a standardized kickback test stand and covered the course of kickback, its energy, angle and duration. The results showed that during the contact of a saw chain with wood, the first to appear was the process of wood cutting, which absorbed 90–95% of the reduced energy of the cutting system. The greater the absorbed energy, the smaller the kickback angle. Wood cutting work is particularly influenced by proper chain tension, the use of chains with anti-kickback links, guide bars with sliding endings and a quickly activated chain brake.

W drugiej części artykułu przedstawiono na wstępie charakterystykę techniczną typowego kotła gazowego dwufunkcyjnego z  otwartą komorą spalania jaki aktualnie jest najczęściej użytkowany w Polsce. Omówione zostały aktualnie obowiązujące przepisy dotyczące wymagań i badań zabezpieczeń na zanik ciągu kominowego jakie są wykonywane przed dopuszczeniem urządzeń do eksploatacji w Polsce. Przedstawiono wyniki badań działania zabezpieczeń na zanik ciągu kominowego jakie zostały wykonane w laboratorium INiG. W podsumowaniu przedstawiono wytyczne mające na celu zmniejszenie ilości wypadków zatruć tlenkiem węgla przy współudziale gazowych, dwufunkcyjnych kotłów centralnego ogrzewania.

„The second part” of the article begins with technical specification of a typical dual-function gas boiler with an open combustion chamber, which is currently the most popular in Poland. Currently binding regulations have been mentioned concerning the requirements and tests for security of continuous chimney flow before the appliances are approved for use in Poland. The results of tests performed at the INiG laboratory have been shown inspecting secure continuous chimney flow. The summary presents some guidelines aiming at reducing the number of carbon oxide poisoning accidents while using the dual-function central heating gas boilers.

It is especially aimed at supervising personnel (who are not electricians). The paper contains a simple explanation of connecting diagrams for the different supply systems commonly used in Poland, and their historical evolution.
