A phase change material (PCM) is a substance, which changes from the solid to liquid and vice versa at a certain temperature. This material absorbs, stores and releases large amounts of energy at this temperature. Many scientists are interested in a quality of PCM, especially in its cooling property, also in textiles. In Reinertsen & co. work, two cooling vests for suergeon were developed: the first one with the organic PCM - fibres with microcapsules filled with paraffines, and the second one with the inorganic PCM - Glaubers salt. Both vests improved moisture transfer, however, the cooling quality of the vest with the organic PCM was only 30% of the cooling quality of the vest with Glaubers salt. The cooling vest with Glauber's salt was also designed for the firemen and the athlets preparing to the Olympic Games. Scientists proved the cooling effect of this vest by two tests carried out on people in a climatized room. Glauber's salt was also used in a head cooling system for motor drivers to improve their concentration and to protect the head from the uncomfortable environment conditions. In spite of the fact that in textiles both the organic and inorganic PCMs are used, it's a hydrate, which gives the best results and moreover, is cheaper than encapsuled paraffines.
