Recently, trends of moving cargo from loaded roads and motorways to waterways and water motorways have been observed in Europe. The huge inland waterways potential is still not widely used. The lack of authorised electronic navigational charts without which navigation is possible only during day time and with low level of safety is one of basic obstacles for the use of inland waterways. According to EU directive, electronic charts in accordance with the Inland ECDIS standard should be also produced for such inland waterways like Odra (the Oder River). Several projects financed by the European Commission concerned River Information Systems (RIS) in which Inland ECDIS is the basic element. The paper presents problems of development of Electronic Navigational Charts systems for River Information Systems.
