The paper discuss problems of basic research in the field of historical manorial gardens. Different kinds of written resources have been described, such as poetry, chronicles, diaries. Author presents a selection of iconographical materials, like maps, photo and painting albums. Suitability of sources is different, as some of them, especially poetry, doesn't present objective reality. Opposite, the maps and photo albums are the most useful resources. On the bases of described materials a few studies of fundamental meaning for Polish gardening history have been established. But there is still a variety of opportunities for interpretation of styles and influences on the bases of historical resources.
