This paper presents a new generation of thiristor-based starters of explosion-proof design along with operation experience gained by the Hard Coal Colliery "Budryk" where such thiristor-based starters have been being applied to the haulage systems.

This paper presents a new direction of development in three-phase induction motors intended for mining machines and devices. It presents the constructional solution of motors integrated with power systems, which posses possibility to control the starting process, revolutions as well as operation visualization and monitoring from the mine surface. Also their disadvantages and advantages were presented as well as various possibilities and methods of controlling the drives in the systems composed of one motor and in multiple-motor driving systems.

W kopalniach węgla kamiennego coraz częściej stosuje się przenośniki taśmowe o długościach zbliżonych do 1 km i większych, wyposażone w napędy wielobębnowe z silnikami asynchronicznymi i w urządzenia łagodnego rozruchu w postaci rozruszników tyrystorowych. Wpływ tych urządzeń na dynamikę rozruchu przenośnika przedstawiono w artykule. W celu lepszego zobrazowania korzyści łagodnego rozruchu, porównano parametry tego rozruchu z parametrami rozruchu bezpośredniego.

At hard coal mines, the belt conveyors of up to 1 km length or greater, equipped with the multi-drum power transmission with asyn-chronous engines and the facilities for soft staring in a form of thyristor starters, are used more and more often. The article presents the effect of these facilities on the starting dynamics of belt conveyors. For better presentation of the soft starting advantages, the parameters of this starting have been compared with those of direct starting.

Using the AC induction motor with direct coupling and adding an electrical starter that can apply reduced voltage to the motor stator, we receive new type of drive system for armoured face conveyors. Since the AC induction motor torque at any speed is a function of the square of the applied terminal voltage, if we control the voltage, we can control the torque during starting. The silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) type, which become economically practical in the 1970 s, dominates the reduced voltage starter classification for belt conveyors today, but in the armoured face conveyors it is applied for the first time. This drive system was subjected to industrial investigation carried out in average productive longwall at the Piast coal mine in order to determine and prove its special features. The apparatus and measuring systems have been described in the paper. Results of the measurements presented in a form of oscillograms have been analysed. Findings of the analysis and conclusions are contained in the final part of the paper.
