Fuzzy SQL queries in standard SQL database

Uncertain queries are very common in many areas of human activity. The problem can be seen particularly in medicine, where expressions like ”very high”, ”low”, ”normal” are commonly used in order to describe different information. However, the most popular data repositories do not allow to form imprecise queries in order to filter information. Therefore, the paper proposes an extension to the standard SQL language allowing anybody to profit from fuzzy database using any SQL engine. The existing approaches employ different mechanisms in order to allow the user to perform fuzzy queries on a database. The most complex solutions modify the database engine itself. However, such approach is strongly bound to the modified server version and must be updated with any development of the original server. Nevertheless, there is possible to store fuzzy information using for instance columns of regular relational database. Therefore, this approach proposes extensions to the query language allowing to use fuzzy information in a query and provides a parser transforming a fuzzy query into a standard SQL. Thus, the database server version is irrelevant. The solution is provided as a module written in multi-platform Java language using popular JDBC database connection.

Integrity rules for multiargument relationships in possibilistic databases

The paper contains an analysis of multiargument relationships in possibilistic databases. A multiargument relationship may be formally presented using the relational notation R(X1, X2,...,Xn), where R is the name of the relationship and attributes Xi denote keys of entity sets which participate in it. The dependencies between all n attributes describe the integrity constraints and must not be infringed. They constitute a restriction for relationships of fewer attributes. In the paper it is considered a possible coexistence of associations between k < n attributes of the n-ary relationship. The analysis is carried out using the theory of fuzzy functional dependencies. The notion of functional dependency has been appropriately extended according to the representation of data.

Skuteczność i efektywność informatycznego wspomagania przedsięwzięć inżynieryjnych może być w znacznej mierze uzależniona od właściwej reprezentacji danych bądź wiedzy i możliwości przetwarzania dostępnych zasobów informacyjnych. Wykorzystywane powszechnie do informatycznego wspomagania przedsięwzięć informacyjno-decyzyjnych klasyczne systemy baz danych i coraz częściej, systemy z bazami wiedzy nie umożliwiają odzwierciedlania powszechnie występującej w przedsięwzięciach inżynieryjnych niepewności, czy niejednoznaczności zasobów informacyjnych. Poszukiwanie rozwiązań informatycznych będących w stanie przetwarzać dane przybliżone skłania do rozpatrzenia możliwości wykorzystania logiki wielowartościowej, a w szczególności logiki rozmytej w modelowaniu danych oraz wiedzy, jak również w procesach przetwarzania zasobów informacyjnych. Dotychczasowy brak rozwiązań w zakresie wykorzystania rozmytych baz danych oraz rozmytych baz wiedzy w obszarze przedsięwzięć inżynieryjnych stanowi przesłankę do podjęcia próby oceny możliwości zastosowania tych technologii do wspomagania procesów informacyjno-decyzyjnych oraz związanych z tym ograniczeń.

The IT tools that are widely used for aiding information and decisionmaking tasks in engineering activities include classic database systems, and in the case of problems with poorly-recognised structure – systems with knowledge bases. The uniqueness of these categories of systems allows, however, neither to represent the approximate or imprecise nature of available data or knowledge nor to process fuzzy data. Since so far there have been no solutions related to the use of fuzzy databases or fuzzy knowledge bases in engineering projects, it seems necessary to make an attempt to assess the possible employment of these technologies to aid analytical and decision-making processes.

The paper deals with fuzzy functional dependencies in relational databases. For data representation a possibility-based approach has been used. It is assumed, that attribute values are represented by means of interval-valued possibility distributions. According to this approach extended definitions of fuzzy functional dependency and fuzzy normal forms have been introduced.

Tematyka artykułu dotyczy modelowania niepełnej informacji w relacyjnych bazach danych za pomocą interwałowych zbiorów rozmytych typu drugiego. Zastosowano podejście posybilistyczne. Wartości atrybutów relacji są reprezentowane za pomocą interwałowych rozkładów możliwości. Przedstawiono analizę oceny stopnia spełnienia warunków stawianych zapytań. Za pomocą interwałowego rozmytego implikatora zdefiniowano pojęcie rozmytej zależności funkcyjnej między atrybutami.

The paper deals with modeling of imperfect information in relational databases by means of interval-valued fuzzy sets. The possibility-based approach has been applied. Attribute values are represented by means of interval possibility distributions. The analysis of the extent to which attribute values satisfy query conditions has been presented. An interval-valued fuzzy implicator has been applied in the definition of the fuzzy functional dependency between attributes.
