Purpose: The aim of the article is to compare the results of effective portfolios obtained after the initial selection using multi-criteria methods with the results of the market portfolio. Design/methodology/approach: When selecting a long-term portfolio, a fundamental analysis can be used to assess a company's economic and financial condition. This analysis is based on fundamental and market indicators. By treating selected indicators as evaluation criteria, the problem can be considered as a multi-criteria problem. In the analyses the TOPSIS methods were used (standard and fuzzy one), which enabled the approach to the issue in a non-standard way. Findings: Three effective portfolios were determined: two of them were obtained after the initial selection of companies using selected multi-criteria methods, the third was generated from the set of all considered companies. The results of these portfolios, estimated for the whole of 2018, were compared with the market portfolio represented by the WIG20 index. The analysis showed that including the fuzzy approach when selecting a portfolio, it is possible to construct more profitable portfolios compared to the market portfolio. Research limitations/implications: The problem requires further research to confirm the recommendations made. Practical implications: Using the proposed approach, we can methodically build more profitable portfolios than the market portfolio. Originality/value: The values of criterion assessments from selected years were treated as triangular fuzzy numbers – this enabled the use of fuzzy approach and the selection of portfolios more attractive than the market one. The study may be of interest to stock market investors.

The aim of this study was to integrate SWOT analysis and the fuzzy TOPSIS method to develop a strategy for the Turkish RMG sector. SWOT analysis was used to determine the strengths&weaknesses and opportunities & threats of the sector. New strategies were developed using SWOT analysis data, and then the fuzzy TOPSIS method was used to rank the strategies for the sector. Four strategies were determined: (1) building global brands, (2) providing government incentives to increase the competitive power of the sector, (3) effective use of e-commerce, and (4) transforming the sector into an attractive business area for young people. Empirical results indicate that the third strategy is ideal for the sector. However, SWOT analysis falls short of determining strategies for any sector. The ability of strategy making processes to yield positive outcomes depends largely on managers’ participation in decision-making processes. Fuzzy TOPSIS was used to model the inherent uncertainty in human knowledge and behaviour and to incorporate sector managers’ views into the system to assess alternatives that integrate SWOT.

Rozmytą metodę TOPSIS wykorzystano do modelowania nieodłącznej niepewności w ludzkiej wiedzy i zachowaniu oraz do włączenia poglądów menedżerów sektora do systemu w celu oceny alternatyw integrujących SWOT.

Occupational health and safety (OHS) management is a cycle of decision-making processes, many of which are in fact multi-criterion processes in nature. Therefore, it is important to look for and develop tools to support decision-makers in their actions aimed at improving work safety levels. The objective of this paper is to propose and verify the fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method applied to compare and assess the ways OHS management systems function in different companies. The fuzzy TOPSIS method has already been used for a number of years in assessments of alternative solutions in many different areas, but the application that uses ordered fuzzy numbers is quite original in nature. It is especially beneficial to use the fuzzy approach in OHS management systems, as it makes it possible for experts to assess different criteria using most frequently used linguistic variables. The adopted approach was verified in the study of OHS management systems in four furniture manufacturing companies. Assessment criteria were requirements of the PN-N 18001:2004 Standard. Thanks to the ordered fuzzy TOPSIS method, the analysed OHS management systems were streamlined from the point of view of 24 assessment criteria, and the best and the worst functioning system was identified. The approach presented here may constitute a significant tool for improving OHS management systems.
