Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based strapdown navigation systems offer advantages such as small size, low cost and minimal power consumption. However, MEMS sensors are prone to significant low-frequency noise and poor bias repeatability, which can lead to navigational errors over time. These errors make them unsuitable for autonomous navigation applications, even with frequent recalibration. One way in which to solve this problem is by using the rotation modulation (RM) method. This approach is widely recognised but has only been successful with precise laser and fiber optic gyroscopes equipped with precise rotating platforms. This article focuses on the potential of adapting the RM method for the case of inexpensive MEMS sensors that can significantly improve navigation performance, while maintaining the benefits of microelectromechanical technologies. Potential issues of implementation were discussed, and corresponding requirements were formulated. The proposed optimal computation scheme was verified during static tests of the developed inertial measurement unit (IMU). Further steps in studying the adaptation of the RM method for MEMS sensors have also been outlined.

A weakly nonlinear thermal instability is investigated under rotation speed modulation. Using the perturbation analysis, a nonlinear physical model is simplified to determine the convective amplitude for oscillatory mode. A non-autonomous complex Ginzburg-Landau equation for the finite amplitude of convection is derived based on a small perturbed parameter. The effect of rotation is found either to stabilize or destabilize the system. The Nusselt number is obtained numerically to present the results of heat transfer. It is found that modulation has a significant effect on heat transport for lower values of ωf while no effect for higher values. It is also found that modulation can be used alternately to control the heat transfer in the system. Further, oscillatory mode enhances heat transfer rather than stationary mode.

Rotation modulation can significantly improve the navigation accuracies of an inertial navigation system (INS) and a strap-down configuration dominating in this type of INS. However, this style of construction is not a good scheme since it has no servo loop to counteract a vehicle manoeuvre. This paper proposes a rotary upgrading method for a rotational INS based on an inertially stabilized platform. The servo control loop is reconstructed on a four-gimbal platform, and it has the functions of providing both a level stability relative to the navigation frame and an azimuth rotation at a speed of 1.2°/s. With the platform’s rotation, the observability and the convergence speed of the estimation for the initial alignment can be improved, as well as the biases of the gyroscopes and accelerometers be modulated into zero-mean periodic values. An open-loop initial alignment method is designed, and its detailed algorithms are delivered. The experiment result shows that the newly designed rotational INS has reached an accuracy of 0.38 n mile/h (CEP, circular error probable). The feasibility and engineering applicability of the designed scheme have been validated.
