Regulacja Wisły i przywrócenie na niej regularnej żeglugi od dziesięcioleci pozostaje tematem nie do rozwiązania. Zmieniają się uwarunkowania polityczne i cywilizacyjne, a królowa polskich rzek wciąż pozostaje niewykorzystaną drogą wodną o międzynarodowym znaczeniu, która z trudem pamięta już lata swojej świetności. Spójrzmy zatem jak sprawa regulacji Wisty wyglądała niemal sto lat temu i jak niewiele zmieniły się stawiane jej dziś wymagania.

The issue of the Vistula River regulation and restoration of normal navigation along its course has not been solved for decades. The political and civilizational conditionschange, but the queen of Polish riversstill remains an underused waterway of international importance, barely remembering the years of its splendour. Let’s see how the issue of the Vistula River regulation looked like a century ago and how little the requirements with regard to it have changed ever sińce.

The paper presents the morphology and the long-term regime of riffles formed in the local widening of river channels: the Ob, the Northern Dvina, and the Ganges. Navigation maps for the last 120 years, detailed channel plans for the last 60 years as well as satellite images from 1977 and further were used to study the long-term regime of riffles. Five types of riffles are distinguished in the widening of river channels. Each type of riffles has a specific regime and a characteristic period of long-term reformations, with both the regime and the period being controlled by local surroundings of riffles. The presented study of the long-term regime of riffles and its relationship with local morphological conditions could be useful to optimize dredging works and, as a consequence, help to preserve optimal conditions of waterways.

Żegluga śródlądowa spełnia na świecie zasadniczą rolę. Szczególnie w Rosji i krajach Europy Zachodniej wykorzystuje się ekonomiczne walory tego transportu. W Polsce żegluga rzeczna jest zaniedbana od lat. Na Wiśle zamarła prawie zupełnie i tylko przewozy odrzańskie są nadal kontynuowane, stanowiąc połączenie z systemem rzek Europy Zachodniej. W artykule podniesiono niektóre problemy żeglugi śródlądowej w Polsce, odnosząc je do stanu w innych krajach.

Inland navigation plays a very essential role in the world. Particularly in Russia and Western Europe the economic advantages of this kind of transport are widely made use of. In Poland river navigation has been neglected for years; it is almost extinct in the Vistula, and only transport in the Odra is continued as the connection with the West European river system. Some problems of inland navigation have been raised in the article, comparing them with conditions in other countries.
