The design of small water reservoirs in Slovakia and neighbouring countries has common origins in the middle of the last century. Most of them were an alternative source of water for irrigation of field crops. Nowadays, we have to face new problems, such as the problems with the design of hydrological data and real current discharges, the problems with original and new design of the flood wave for the solution of the safety overflow. All of Q100 flows recorded nowadays are much higher than those which had been designed and built. The safety overflows no longer answer the purpose of the contemporary flows. The problems with the Framework Directive are also important – small water reservoirs are not resolved in the Directive as the water bodies of stagnant water because they have an area of less than 0.5 km2. The same problem is also with the preservation of continuity of the flow and the fact that they should let the fish pass. Unfortunately, the state, administrators of small dams, operators and nature conservationists have different points of view on the above-mentioned problems. The article elaborates these problems and suggests possible solutions to the problems.

W artykule przedstawiono zaburzenia w naturalnych relacjach pomiędzy temperaturą wody w rzece Ropie (polskie Karpaty) a temperaturą powietrza, zachodzących w profilu podłużnym rzeki, spowodowanych funkcjonowaniem zbiornika retencyjnego Klimkówka. Zaistniałe zakłócenia w relacjach temperatura wody – temperatura powietrza są efektem transformacji naturalnego reżimu termicznego Ropy poniżej zbiornika Klimkówka, wynikającej z kształtowania się wewnątrz zbiornika w ciągu roku stratyfikacji termicznej. W opracowaniu zwrócono także uwagę na rolę zbiorników retencyjnych w przerywaniu continuum termicznego rzek. Przedstawione wyniki wskazują na konieczność uwzględniania oddziaływania zbiorników retencyjnych na termikę rzek w badaniach zależności między temperaturą wody w rzece a temperaturą powietrza, wykorzystywanych do przewidywania wpływu potencjalnych zmian klimatycznych na ekosystemy rzeczne.

This paper presents the problem disturbances in the natural relations between the temperature of water in the Ropa river (Polish Carpathians) and the air temperature, occurring in longitudinal profile of the river, caused by the functioning of the Klimkówka reservoir. Occurred disturbances in the water temperature – air temperature relations are the result of the transformation of natural thermal regime of the Ropa river below the Klimkówka reservoir resulting from forming a thermal stratification inside the reservoir during a year. The paper drew attention to the role of reservoirs in interrupting the thermal continuum of rivers. The results demonstrate the need to consider the impact of reservoirs on the thermals of the rivers in the study of relations between water temperature in the river and the air temperature, used to predict the potential impact of climate change on river ecosystems.

The phytoseston in the Płociczna River originated mainly from lakes situated in its water course. It was more abundant and diverse in spring than in summer, which was related to differences in water discharge. The phytoseston abundance between the stations at the inlets and outlets of the successive lakes increased 9.7, 1.9 and decreased 1.4 times, respectively. A gradual reduction in the abundance of organisms was also noted at the outlets of successive lakes, which indicated a decrease in the trophic status of the water. The abundance of phytoseston between the outlets and inlets to the subsequent lakes (river stretch) decreased considerably. Disturbances in the river continuum system caused by the lakes situated in the river course resulted in the acceleration of potamoplankton succession.
