The work concerns the designed “Kluczbork” water reservoir (in case of the maximum swelling level, the reservoir capacity will reach 1.683 million m3 , whereas its area - 56.7 ha) located in the catchment area of the Stobrawa River (the right tributary of the Odra River) in Opole Voivodship. The reservoir is to be the fi rst in the succession among the structures executed within the scope of the Small Retention Reservoir Program in Opole Voivodship. The basic function of the reservoir is protection against floods. Apart from that, the reservoir will also serve for agriculture and recreation; therefore water quality of the reservoir is extremely vital. Their objective was to determine the changes of physiochemical properties of water that fl ows in the cross-section of the designed reservoir. The assessment was made on the basis of the water quality tests of the Stobrawa River, analysing such indicators as: NO3-, NO2- , NH4+, PO43-, Pog, BZT5, water temperature, water reaction and electrolytic conductivity. The tests were carried out from May 2004 to April 2005. The tests demonstrated high water pollution of the Stobrawa River in the affl uent to the reservoir; therefore, the water may deteriorate the water quality of the reservoir. The work presents recommendations that may improve the quality of water that supplies the designed reservoir so that the water retained there in the future was not characterised by poor quality. One of the basic solutions is to rearrange the water and sewage management in the catchment area of the reservoir. These actions need to precede the process of reservoir construction. Another solution is to erect a primary settling tank that would improve water quality in the reservoir and extent its life.
