EN
Grunerlokka. The most fashionable district in Oslo. In this place there are situated many modern clubs, restaurants, bars and alternative theaters. A lot of young, prosperous people live there now. It is hard to believe that about fifteen years ago it was devastated, dark, postindustrial district, mostly occupied with poor people and emigrants from Pakistan. Grunerlokka is placed just outside of downtown, but it is still a walking distance from it. This quarter is situated between historical road to Oslo from north and river Akerselva. River and its greenery isolate this district from city center. Areas around Akerselva have been since many years connected with industry. History of this place started in 1856. In that year owner of this part of Oslo Mr. Gruner divided his land into single plots and sold them. Private investors build over those plots with tenement - houses for labors working in factories close to the river. Grunerlokka was developing intensively till year 1898 when economy went down. In the beginning of last century, this part of Oslo was still supposed to be an industrial area. Turning point in history of Grunerlokka were 70-ties, when emigrants from Pakistan settled there. Also students, artists and young people who wanted to live cheap and close to the city center moved there. This new young inhabitants discovered that old factories in Grunerlokka are good for clubs, storage houses are easy to adopt for studios and Akerselva with its greenery is a perfect place for Sunday picnic with friends. In that time this district become a fashionable place. A lot of reach people from Oslo started moving there. Prices of flats increased dramatically. Nowadays this quarter is at a turning point. There are high prices, many residents, a lot of noise and hardly any students and Pakistanis. They were forced to move out. At the present moment similar process to this in Grunerlokka takes place in quarter called Grunland.
