Reclamation of riverside postindustrial land – case study of Frankfurt and Warsaw

The article presents two examples of reclamation of riverside industrial spaces, in Frankfurt and Warsaw. The location of the analysed post-industrial land is extremely attractive and desired by investors due to the vicinity of the city centre and transport accessibility. The renewal of riverside land should occur in cooperation of private and public entities and the local community. Transformations of the existing post-industrial areas are in opposition to urban sprawl, corresponding with the rules of sustainable development and compact city. Reclaiming urbanised spaces counteracts the occurrence of crisis areas, neglected and omitted by residents because they are dangerous and unfriendly.

W artykule przedstawiono dwa przykłady odzyskania przestrzeni przemysłowej nadrzecznej, jeden we Frankfurcie nad Menem, drugi w Warszawie. Lokalizacja analizowanych obszarów poprzemysłowych jest bardzo atrakcyjna, pożądana przez inwestorów z racji bliskości do centrum czy dobrej komunikacji. Odnowienie terenów nadrzecznych powinno być dokonywane przy współpracy podmiotów prywatnych, publicznych i społeczności lokalnej. Przekształcenia istniejących obszarów poprzemysłowych są przeciwstawieniem się rozlewaniu miast, co jest zgodne z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju i miasta zwartego. Odzyskiwanie zurbanizowanej przestrzeni miejskich jest słuszne, ponieważ przeciwdziała występowaniu obszarów kryzysowych, zaniedbanych, omijanych przez mieszkańców z racji iż są niebezpieczne i nieprzyjazne.

The authors used three example variants of rural development solutions to present the problem of defining the space of the contemporary countryside gardens of small, local parish communities in the former GDR, taking into consideration its integrative function. The three design subjects pre-sented in the paper (each developed with two variants) concern spatial arrangement of a parish garden as a public space for: community meetings and recreation (example 1 - fig. 1, 2), studying and recreation (example 2 - fig. 3,4), and relaxation/ meditation (example 3 - fig. 5, 6). All of them in the same attempt to organize space of wastelands; areas devastated culturally and naturally, but still important in the spatial structure of the town. The relations between the presented places local their use by local parish communities served as an impulse to define the fundamental, conceptual presumptions that let the presented composition suggestions take into account their timeless role of humanization of open space, with their potential standard of usage. One essential value of the presented examples is their practical potential - expected investment decisions after their public presentation to entire local communities (with declared support).

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie rewitalizacji przyrodniczej jako jednego z instrumentów zarządzania miastem, szczególnie istotnego dla fazy jego reurbanizacji. Zagadnienie to zilustrowane zostało na przykładzie Łodzi. Scharakteryzowano jej rozwój przestrzenny i relacje tego procesu ze stanem przyrody, a następnie opisano podejmowane dotychczas inicjatywy rewitalizacyjne, poddając je ocenie z punktu widzenia znaczenia dla ochrony przyrodniczych walorów przestrzeni miejskiej. Na tej podstawie autorzy przedstawiają rekomendacje odnośnie przyszłych, potencjalnych działań w zakresie rewitalizacji przyrodniczej Łodzi.

The aim of this paper is to show nature revitalization as a tool of city management, especially important for re-urbanisation processes. A case study of such issue is the city of Lodz. Firstly, spatial development of Lodz and its relationship to the problems of nature conservation are described. Secondly, revitalization's project which have been done, are characterised and evaluated, focusing on its aspects in the field of nature conservation within the urban environment. In the end authors try to make some conclusion and recommendations for further nature revitalization initiatives in municipality of Lodz.
