Management of a restorative restructuring project with the use of reengineering methods – case study of a pump production enterprise

Purpose: The subject of interest of this article is reengineering and restructuring. The purpose of the article is to answer the question: is remedial restructuring carried out using reengineering methods more efficient, i.e. is a greater percentage of the assumed restructuring goals achieved in a given unit of time than in a project carried out without using this method? Design/methodology/approach: The process of restructuring management described in the article is supported by a case study of a company dealing with production of pumps. The case study shows how effective the reengineering method is for managing corrective change. The restructuring project described in the article was aimed at eliminating unproductive processes in the company, and then leading to the development of the company by conducting organizational changes and radical rebuilding of the company's business processes. Findings: Conclusions from the case study analysis provide clear evidence that remedial restructuring using reengineering is much more efficient than in a traditional project. Originality/value: The article supplements knowledge in the field of change management. The conclusions presented in it regarding the usefulness of the reengineering method when conducting remedial processes in enterprises can be used by change managers as an indication to successfully carry out restructuring implementations.

W 2013 r. jedna ze spółek węglowych w Polsce znalazła się w bardzo trudnej sytuacji finansowej. Sytuacja ta wynika z występujących zjawisk na rynku węgla energetycznego w kraju i zagranicą. Zła sytuacja analizowanej spółki wynika również z wielu uwarunkowań wewnętrznych. W artykule wskazano na pilną potrzebę podjęcia działań restrukturyzacyjnych, które pozwolą na odzyskanie przez spółkę płynności finansowej, a w dalszym okresie na jej rozwój. Przedstawiono również wiele działań naprawczych, które powinny znaleźć się w programie restrukturyzacji analizowanej spółki węglowej.

In 2013 one of the coal companies in Poland got into serious financial difficulties. They resulted from the phenomena on the energy coal market in Poland and abroad. The bad condition of the company came also from many internal factors. This paper indicates an urgent need to take restructuring measures which may allow the company to return to financial liquidity, and consequently – further development. The series of remedial actions which should be part of the restructuring program of the analyzed coal company were also described.

In the paper market situation of domestic steel industry during restructuring process was characterized. In the analysis the key elements of enterprises competitiveness in number contexts were presented (analysis was realized in the period 1990÷2010). Moreover the capital changes in the steel industry and their influence on the competitiveness of metallurgical enterprises were presented too. In the paper two kinds of restructuring were described: repair and development.

W artykule przedstawiono sytuację rynkową krajowego sektora hutniczego po przeprowadzonych działaniach restrukturyzacyjnych. Analizą objęto kluczowe aspekty konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw, przedstawiając ich ujęcie liczbowe w okresie 1990÷2010. Scharakteryzowano przemiany własnościowe dokonujące się w sektorze hutniczym w Polsce, podkreślając znaczenie restrukturyzacji naprawczej i rozwojowej w dążeniu do osiągnięcia przewagi konkurencyjnej.
