Remote estimation of vital signs is an important and active area of research. The goal of this work was to analyze the feasibility of estimating respiration parameters from video sequences of faces recorded using a mobile thermal camera. Different estimators were analyzed and experimentally verified. It was demonstrated that the respiration rate, peri-odicity of respiration, and presence and length of apnea periods could be reliably estimated from signals recorded using a portable thermal camera. The size of the camera and efficiency of the methods allow the implementation of this method in smart glasses.

Seasonal variations of environmental factors, such as temperature and salinity, require metabolic acclimatization in sedentary benthic fauna distributed over a wide geographical range. The soft-shell clam Mya arenaria inhabits the coastal waters of the North Atlantic including North America and Europe. In Europe, M. arenaria populations are distributed from Iceland to the Mediterranean Sea, including the North Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea. Seasonal changes in physiological parameters (gonad index, condition index, biochemical composition and respiration rate) of M. arenaria from the Baltic Sea (the Gulf of Gdańsk, Poland), and the North Sea (Versee Meer, the Netherlands) were studied. The sex ratio of both populations did not differ from 1:1 and the seasonal gonad index was higher in the Baltic population. The average condition index changed seasonally at both studied sites, and was also higher in the Baltic population (except the autumn) compared to the North Sea. In both studied populations, the content of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates in the soft tissue followed the seasonal variations, and it was higher in the Baltic population. The respiration rate was lower in the Baltic population, and seasonal changes in the respiration rate seem to be correlated with changes in the water temperature. Based on the results obtained in the present study, we suggest that Mya arenaria is characterized by a large phenotypic plasticity and differences in the observed physiological traits are due to acclimatization to ambient environmental conditions.

The effects of environment and work conditions on fatigue of draught buffalo have been studied under controlled condition using an animal treadmill. The physiological, hematological, biochemical, skin temperature, cardiovascular, and muscle strain responses along with distress symptoms of test draught he-buffaloes when exerting a draught of 0,10 and 14% body weight at 1.5 and 2.0 km/h speed with 0, 5 and 10° inclination of treadmill at two temperatures (22 and 42°C) and two levels of humidity (45 and 90%) were studied for four effective hours or time till test draught he-buffalo reached a state of fatigue. Model developed with multiple linear regression technique which showed best fit for physiological, hematological, biochemical, mineral variables, skin temperature, cardiovascular, muscle strain parameters and duration of exercise.

Badano wpływ środowiska i warunków pracy na wyniki prób wysiłkowych bawołu domowego w kontrolowanych warunkach podczas pracy w kieracie. Bawoły chodziły z prędkością 1,5 i 2,0 km/h, z obciążeniem równym: 0, 10 i 14% masy ciała, w kieracie nachylonym pod kątami: 0, 5 i 10°, w warunkach: temperatura 22 i 42°C, wilgotność powietrza 45 i 90%. Wyniki: fizjologiczne, hematologiczne, biochemiczne, sercowo-naczyniowe, temperaturę skóry i napięcie mięśni oraz objawy zaburzeń, zebrano podczas czterech godzin efektywnego testu trwającego do zmęczenia bawołu. Techniką wielokrotnej regresji liniowej opracowano model parametrów opisujących otrzymane wyniki i pozwalających na dobór właściwego czasu trwania wysiłku.
