Variability of macrostructural parameters in resonant spruce wood (Picea abies L.). This paper presents the results of research on variation of annual rings width and percentage of latewood in the resonant spruce wood. These parameters of element intended for building musical instruments shall be adopted as the main criteria for visual assessment of resonant wood quality. The results of the study indicate that the mean values of these features do not fully reflect the degree of heterogeneity of cyclic macrostructure of wood. They should be complemented by the results of statistical analysis (variance) indicating the level of significance of differences in macrostructural parameters in individual increments of elements visually classified as resonant wood.

A study on the dependence between tracheid lengths and microfibril angle in resonant wood of spruce (Picea abies L.)

The paper presents results of measurements for tracheid lengths in annual growth rings in spruce wood classified as resonant wood. Annual rings came from the mature wood zone. Moreover, cellulose microfibril angle (MFA) was determined in the S2 layer of the secondary cell wall. This parameter was measured in tangential tracheid walls. Mean values of both tracheid lengths and MFA in the experimental annual growth rings showed slight fluctuations and the relationship of these values was described using a linear function.
