The protective clothing made from a barrier material is frequently the cause of thermal stress suffered by the user. Many relevant studies have shown that there is a close correlation between the properties of the textile materials worn close to the body and the intensity with which heat and sweat are removed from the interface, which determines the sub-clothing microclimate and level of the experienced discomfort. A model of two-layer fabric for use under the hermetic protective barrier was assumed. The aim of the study was to determine how various types of structure of the sub-barrier textile packet influence the sub-barrier microclimate and suggest, on that basis, an optimum structure for use under the conditions of intensive physical effort. Single-component knitted fabrics made from different raw materials and non-woven fabrics containing a super-absorbents, were tested for the following parameters: resistance to penetration of heat and water vapour; dynamics of increase of humidity of sub-barrier microclimate; capacity for sorption of liquids. The study showed that the textile materials used under protective barrier clothing could substantially influence the formation of the microclimate close to the body by their properties related to the transport of heat and water vapour, sorption of water vapour, and sorption of liquid sweat. The best materials for use as the packet under protective barrier is selected.
