This study examines the effectiveness of modified drinking water treatment residue (MDWTR) in removing Microcystis aeruginosa, as well as its collaborative action with poly aluminium chloride (PAC) for effective contaminant removal. In addition, the phosphorus adsorption capacities of MDWTR samples with differing particle sizes are evaluated. The results indicate that MDWTR alone has a positive effect on Microcystis aeruginosa removal, with S-type MDWTR(<90 μm) exhibiting the highest removal efficiency. Moreover, when combined with PAC, MDWTR’s removal efficiency is significantly enhanced, further validating its efficacy. The analysis of isotherms provides strong evidence for the substantial adsorption capacities of MDWTR samples, with various MDWTR types exhibiting distinct affinities. These results demonstrate MDWTR’s potential as adsorbent, Microcystis aeruginosa removing and emphasise its versatility in water treatment applications.

By-pass dusts are waste products formed during the production of Portland clinker. Due to the high amounts of chlorine in by-pass dust, they cannot be reused in cement production. Mineral fertilizer producers have the technology to recover potassium from by-pass dust, during which unwanted chlorine is simultaneously extracted. Due to the high content of non-carbonated CaO in the residue after extracting potassium and chlorine from by-pass dust, this material can be a very valuable ingredient in the production of Portland clinker. This paper aims to present the possibility of producing low-emission Portland clinker using the residue after extracting potassium and chlorine from by-pass dust. Using the maximum amount of extraction residue in the raw material sets from which Portland clinker is produced reduced emissions by 407.6 kg CO2 per Mg of Portland clinker, compared to Portland clinker produced from natural carbonate raw materials. Additionally, cements made from clinkers calcined with extraction residue showed better strength increases after 2, 7, 28, and 90 days of curing compared to reference cement made from Portland clinker calcined with natural carbonate raw materials.

In this present study, biodiesel was synthesized as per ASTM method by using algae as a raw material, which in the environment is considered as being a harmful waste and of a nature that blooms in ponds, lakes and reservoirs. In order to improve fuel quality, the transesterification process was carried out in this study so as to remove fatty acids and thereafter, analyze several fuel parameters of the biodiesel were determined. The calorific value of the biodiesel and its specific gravity was 42660 kJ/kg and 0.803 g/cm3 respectively. The viscosity of the sample was found to be 1.99. The cetane number of diesel fuel ranged from 40 to 55 and for the biodiesel it was found to be 47. The flashpoint and firepoint of the sample was recorded as 80°C and 94°C respectively. The conclusion is that it is worthy to mention that this process does not require high-end technology; hence, it could be used in the energy generation process in remote areas and as an alternative resource, as well.

Results of conducted tests described in the text prove practical usefulness of application of granulate recovered from re-cycling of concrete mix returning to concrete producer centers. Granulate material recovered after application of admixture set fulfill all the requirements of the requirements of the standard EN 12620 code titled “Aggregate for concrete”. It is worth to underline that there were not observed any differences in results of compressive strengths of concrete mixes produced on the base on traditional aggregate and those recovered from re-cycling process.

Purpose: Refractory life, in Al-casting processes such as alloy wheel production, is obviously affected by the inclusions formed in the transfer ladles and holding/melting furnaces in which melting, fluxing and degassing operations are carried out. The short refractory life affects, adversely, the economical aspect of the process. Therefore, a study on the physical and chemical properties of the above mentioned inclusions has been started. The main purpose of the study is to understand the relationships among the metallurgical processes taking place during casting, properties of the refractories used and the formation of inclusions. Design/methodology/approach: During this industry-university joint study, experimental studies using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and optical microscopy were used to investigate the nature and properties of the inclusions. Also, corrosion behaviour of six different refractories was investigated by exposing them to molten aluminium.

Monitoring of undesirable substances by the European Union indicates a presence of natural and anthropogenic pollutants in animal feed that may be of concern for the producers, as well as the veterinary services. Although the literature concerning toxicity of DDT (an insecticide widely used in the past) is extensive, less attention has been focused on the biological properties of DDE and its interactions with other contaminants. This study reports on the concentration profile of p,p’-DDE and two other ogranochlorines (p,p’-DDT, p,p’-DDD) in different tissues of immature gilts after 14, 28, and 42 days of oral exposure to p,p’-DDE alone (0.5mg·kg-1feed·day-1) and in mixture with naturally occurring mycotoxin zearalenone, ZEN (0.5+0.1mg·kg-1feed·day-1). The treatment resulted in a time-dependent accumulation of p,p’-DDE in fat-rich tissues. Although the pesticide’s concentration found in the adipose tissue exceeded the FAO/WHO maximum residue limit (5mg·kg-1 of fat), human dietary risk is little, as it requires a substantial consumption of such contaminated pork fat. Importantly, the high concentration of p,p’-DDE found in the adrenal glands suggests a threat to the animals’ health. Finally, a difference in the accumulation of p,p’-DDE was observed between the groups treated with this compound alone or in mixture with ZEN. This is most likely related to growth performance of the animals, altered by the endocrine disrupting activity of both compounds. Further research should evaluate the effects of p,p-DDE at the observed concentrations on the pigs’ health status and enable the studies of possible interactions with other environmental pollutants.

High-performance liquid chromatography with a hydrophilic-interaction liquid chromatographic (HILIC) column has been successfully used to retain and separate the polar phosphonic herbicides glyphosate and glufosinate. Online electrospray tandem ion-trap mass spectrometric and DAD detection were used. The effects on the separation of mobile phase acetonitrile content, buffer concentration, and flow rate, and of column temperature, were investigated. With UV-visible detection at 195 nm, LOQ were <850 mg kg -1, showing the method is suitable for product quality control of these herbicides alone or in combination. Tandem mass spectrometric conditions were optimized for ion-trap detection. Quantification was by use of selected reaction monitoring transitions m / z 168 → 150 in negative-ion mode for glyphosate and m / z 182 → 136 in positive-ion mode for glufosinate. Limits of detection (LOD; S / N > 3) were 0.20 and 0.16 ng for glyphosate and glufosinate, respectively, and the respective limits of quantification (LOQ; S / N = 10) were 0.02 and 0.05 mg kg -1 . Sample derivatization was not necessary to achieve low detection limits in residue analysis in this study. Recovery from watermelon, spinach, potato, tomato, radish-root, and water fortified with the herbicides ranged from 63.6 to 107.3% and relative standard deviations were <15.3%.

Content available remote Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in heavy fuel oil components
EN
Heavy fuel oils are blended products based on the residues from various refinery distillation and conversion processes. In refineries with hydrogen process units or lubricating oil rerafination units, the hydroprocessed vacuum residue or the used lubricating oil are fuel oil components. Appreciable concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) can be present in heavy fuel oils depending on the type of the components used. The goal of this study was the determination of the selected PAHs which are probably phototoxic or carcinogenic. The following components were put to the test: straight-run vacuum residue, hydroprocessed vacuum residue, vacuum gas oil, two samples of the used lubricating oils and two samples of vacuum distillate of the employed oils. The next PAH concentrations were determined: anthracene, benz(a)antracene, chrysene, benzo(b+k)fluorathene, benzo(a)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene. The larger amounts of the most phototoxic and carcinogenic PAHs: benzo(a)pyrene and dibenzo(a,h)anthracene were found in the applied lubricating oil components.
