Woman’s Costume in the Territories of Poland during the Roman Period. Reconstruction Based on Finds from Nowy Łowicz in Pomerania

During archaeological excavations in Nowy Łowicz, Pomerania (Poland), in 1991, burial mound 55 with a woman’s grave was examined, in which numerous fragments of textiles, costume accessories and jewellery had been preserved. The work presents the results of structural and technological analysis of fragments preserved. Based on these, as well as on preserved iconography and analogous archaeological finds, an attempt was made to reconstruct the woman’s clothing from the period to which the grave is dated, i.e. phase B2/C1 of the Roman period. The reconstruction was made by means of computer graphics and includes three elements of clothing: a shirt, dress and short coat, made by identified techniques and partly taking into account the original colours. The work done is particularly important due to the fact that this is the first attempt to reconstruct a woman’s complete clothing worn on the territory of what is now Poland in the above-mentioned period.

Podczas wykopalisk archeologicznych w Nowym Łowiczu na Pomorzu w 1991 roku zbadano kurhan 55 z grobem kobiecym, w którym zachowały się liczne fragmenty tkanin, ozdób i biżuterii. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analizy strukturalnej i technologicznej zachowanych fragmentów tkanin. Na ich podstawie, a także na podstawie ikonografii i analogicznych znalezisk archeologicznych podjęto próbę zrekonstruowania ubioru kobiecego z okresu, w którym datowany jest grób, tj. fazy B2/C1 okresu rzymskiego. Rekonstrukcja została wykonana za pomocą grafiki komputerowej i obejmuje trzy elementy ubioru: koszulę, suknię i krótki płaszcz, wykonane w zidentyfikowanych technikach i częściowo z uwzględnieniem oryginalnych kolorów. Wykonana praca jest szczególnie ważna, ponieważ była to pierwsza próba rekonstrukcji kompletnego ubioru kobiecego noszonego w okresie rzymskim na terytorium dzisiejszej Polski.

Archaeological textiles bear important testimony to everyday life, farming, trade, migration of nations, religious rituals, art and technical culture. The main reason we know very little about them is that textiles are very impermanent, fragile, and can survive well only in very good conditions. Most of them become nearly completely destroyed due to ageing in an extremely hard archaeological environment . However, it is possible to determine and identify the properties that archaeological textiles had in the past. Research undertaken by us resulted in the development of methods of analysis and visualisation of archaeological textiles in the form they were originally made, which will be presented in our next paper. This paper is to present the main problems scientists have to face when dealing with archaeological textiles .

Tekstylia archeologiczne są ważnym świadectwem zmieniających się na przestrzeni wieków obyczajów, rolnictwa, handlu, migracji ludności, religijności, sztuki, a także kultury technicznej. Głównym powodem niewielkiej wiedzy na ich temat jest fakt, że tekstylia są bardzo nietrwałe i mogą przetrwać jedynie w bardzo przyjaznych warunkach. Większość z nich ulega niemal całkowitemu zniszczeniu w ekstremalnie trudnym środowisku archeologicznym. Możliwe jest jednak określenie i identyfikacja ich oryginalnych własności. Podjęte przez autorów badania zaowocowały opracowaniem metod analizy i wizualizacji oryginalnego wyglądu tekstyliów archeologicznych, które będą przedmiotem kolejnej publikacji. Celem prezentowanej pracy jest przedstawienie głównych problemów, z jakimi stykamy się w badaniach tekstyliów archeologicznych.
