With the aim of considering the problem of excess fuel cold energy and excessive power consumption of refrigerated containers on large LNG-powered container ships, a new utilisation method using LNG-fuelled cold energy to cool refrigerated containers in cargo holds is proposed in this study, and the main structure of the cold storage in the method is modelled in three dimensions. Then, combined with the different conditions, 15 different combination schemes of high temperature cold storage and low temperature cold storage are designed to utilise the cold energy of LNG fuel, the exergy efficiency and cold energy utilisation rate calculation model of the system is established. The simulation tool ‘Aspen HYSYS’ is used to simulate and calculate the exergy efficiency and cold energy utilisation rate of the system under 15 combinations, verifying the feasibility of the scheme. According to the characteristics of such a ship’s cross-seasonal navigation routes and the number of refrigerated containers loaded in different ports, the combination schemes of the number of low-temperature cold storage and high-temperature cold storage are selected. Thus, the average exergy efficiency and cold energy utilisation rate of the whole line is obtained, which proves that LNG-powered container ships could effectively utilise the cold energy of LNG. By calculating the total electric energy consumed by refrigerated containers on the whole sailing route, before and after the adoption of the LNG cold energy method, it is found that the adoption of this new method can promote the realisation of energy saving and emission reduction of ships.

This model optimizes port hinterland intermodal refrigerated container flows , considering both cost and quality degradation, which is distinctive from the previous literature content in a way that it quantifies the influence of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in different setting temperature on intermodal network planning. The primary contribution of this paper is that the model is beneficial not only to shippers and customers for the novel service design, but also offer , for policy-makers of the government, insights to develop inland transport infrastructures in consideration of intermodal transportation. The majority of models of multimodal system have been established with an objective of cost minimization for normal commodities. As the food quality is possible to be influenced by varying duration time required for the storage and transportation, and transportation accompanied with refrigeration producing more CO2 emission, this paper aims to address cost minimization and quality degradation minimization within the constraint of CO2 footprint. To achieve this aim, we put the quality degradation model in a mixed-integer linear programming model used for intermodal network planning for cold chain. The example of Dalian Port and Yingkou Port offer insight into trade-offs between transportation temperature and transport mode considering CO2 footprint. Furthermore, the model can offer a useful reference for other regions with the demand for different imported food, which requires an uninterrupted cold chain during the transportation and storage.

Artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie koncepcji metodyki kreowania łańcuchów transportowych kontenerów chłodniczych z wykorzystaniem różnych gałęzi transportu, przy uwzględnieniu wpływu czynników ryzyka. Omówiono w nim pojęcie łańcucha transportowego kontenerów chłodniczych oraz przedstawiono przykłady sytuacji nad-zwyczajnych z tymi kontenerami, wywołanych wpływem czynników ryzyka w transporcie morskim, drogowym i kolejowym. W artykule zaproponowano algorytm postępowania umożliwiający wybór właściwego kształtu łańcucha transportowego, włączający analizę czynników ryzyka występujących podczas realizacji poszczególnych ogniw, jak i całego łańcucha transportowego. Zaprezentowana koncepcja pozwala wesprzeć proces podejmowania decyzji przez osoby odpowiedzialne za planowanie łańcuchów transportowych kontenerów chłodniczych.

The aim of the article is to present the methodology concept of refrigerated containers transport chains creation, using different transport modes and taking into account risk factors influence. The essence of refrigerated containers transport chain was discussed and the emergencies examples with these containers, caused by influence of risk factors in maritime, road and rail transport were considered. An algorithm procedure for selecting the proper shape of transport chain, including analysis of risk factors that occur during implementation of individual links and the entire transport chain was proposed. Presented concept enables the support for decision-makers responsible for planning of refrigerated containers transport chains.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza funkcji narzędzi informatycznych stosowanych do obsługi ładunków skonteneryzowanych w portach morskich oraz przedstawienie koncepcji narzędzia informatycznego pozwalającego ocenić poziom ryzyka utraty walorów jakościowych ładunków w kontenerach chłodniczych obsługiwanych na terenie portu. W artykule przedstawiono specyfikę obsługi kontenerów chłodniczych. Scharakteryzowano podstawowe zakresy zadań systemów informatycznych stosowanych w zarządzaniu pracą terminali kontenerowych. Analizie poddano funkcje systemów informatycznych polskich terminali kontenerowych uwzględniające specyfikę obsługi kontenerów chłodniczych. Zaproponowano koncepcję narzędzia informatycznego pozwalającego analizować poziom ryzyka utraty walorów jakościowych ładunków zawartych w kontenerach chłodniczych podczas ich obsługi na terenie portów. Wykorzystanie tego narzędzia jako modułu oprogramowania terminali kontenerowych pozwoli ułatwić pracownikom portu podejmowanie skutecznych decyzji dotyczących obsługi kontenerów chłodniczych.

The aim of the article is analysis of functions of IT tools used in containerized cargo service in seaports and to present the concept of IT tool allowing to assess the risk level of quality loss of perishable cargo inside refrigerated containers during their service at seaport. The article presents the specificity of refrigerated containers handling. The basic tasks of IT systems used in container terminal management were characterized. The functions of information systems of Polish container terminals reffering to specificity of refrigerated containers handling were analyzed. A concept of an IT tool that allows to analyze the risk level of quality loss of perishable cargo inside refrigerated containers during their service in seaports was proposed. The application of this tool as a module of container terminal software will support the port staff with decision-making process regarding the refrigerated containers service.

The presented paper is concerned with the problems of assessing the risk level for service chain of refrigerated containers in seaports. This issue has been examined with regard to the losses related to the loss of cargo’s qualitative values. The paper identifies the links in the service chain as well as related hazards and events resulting in losses. The term “chain” has been defined for the refrigerated container service chain. Material losses generated by the loss of cargo’s qualitative values have also been examined. The paper suggests and justifies functional and numeric risk measures. With regard to the examined process the study presents the elements of loss modelling methodology. The risk level has been evaluated using selected calculation examples, considering the impact of the probability of events resulting in losses.
