The possibilities of polycarbonate recyclate application as a filler for rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate foams (PUR-PIR) have been studied. Waste polycarbonate originating from Marine Equipment Factory FAMOR in Bydgoszcz was milled on grinding mill equipped with sieves and then it was added to foam composition in the amounts from 5% to 30% w/w with respect to the total amount of polyisocyanate and oligomerol. Seven foam samples with various content of polycarbonate recyclate were obtained by the above method. The diameter of the granulated product was 2mm. The parameters of processing were measured during the synthesis. The following physicochemical properties have been determined: apparent density, change of linear and volume dimensions, mass decrement, softening point, brittleness, compressive strength, residue after combustion. It was found that foam density, compressive strength and residue after combustion increased, whereas brittleness and softening point decreased as the content of granulated product was increased in foam composition. The changes of linear and volume dimensions as well as weight decrement of foams after 48 hours of thermostating at 393K are practically independent of the content of polycarbonate granulated product. Our studies prove that the waste polycarbonate recyclate can be applied as the filler for the rigid polyurethane-polyisocyanurate foams.
