The article presents basic problems concerning combat and reconnaissance zones referring to conditions in which land forces function nowadays. The article is an attempt to unify terms concerning the battlefield, military reconnaissance including. The solutions shown resulted from experiences gathered during exercises in which NATO officers participated and from western military literature. The solutions presented are an attempt of „terminology integration” with the Alliance countries, particularly, in the aspect of reconnaissance zones division and separation of competencies. Integrated reconnaissance system is the core of the whole country defence system functioning. Hence, the necessity to adapt the procedures of Polish land forces reconnaissance operations to principles binding in NATO. The problem is essential as the number of units planned to take part in UN multinational forces structures, „Partnership for Peace” exercises or participation in humanitarian missions is increasing.
