W artykule, na tle charakterystyki polskiej branży węgla brunatnego, przedstawiono stan rekultywacji terenów pogórniczych w poszczególnych kopalniach do 2010 roku. Omówiono procesy nabywania terenów pod działalność górniczą i zbywania ich po przeprowadzonych pracach rekultywacyjnych oraz dotychczasowe osiągnięcia kopalń w zakresie rekultywacji i rewitalizacji terenów poeksploatacyjnych. Z artykułu wyłania się obraz byłych terenów eksploatacyjnych, które obecnie - po procesie zagospodarowania - służą mieszkańcom do celów rekreacyjnych i w sposób znaczący podnoszą atrakcyjność regionów, w których się znajdują.

Providing the characteristics of the Polish lignite mining industry, the article presents the progress (until 2010) of the reclamation of post-mining areas in various mines. Reclamation and land management is carried out systematically as the areas are recovered from moving mining sites. The works are carried out at a high level which ensures the use of the areas for forest (60 per cent of the reclaimed areas), agricultural (20 per cent) and water (10 per cent) production or for other activities, including recreation (10 per cent). Open-pit mining of deposits is painful for the environment. However, if mining and then reclamation is planned and carried out properly, the effects may increase the attractiveness of the site by enriching the landscape that has new morphological forms set harmoniously in it, supporting forest management and conservation of naturę (formation of new habitats) and creating resting areas. The examples of the attractiveness of landscape, nature and culture in the post-mining areas shown in the article make us look at the mining industry as at an activity that creates new values of the environment. The post-mining areas with a unique landscape blend into the region and are not perceived as places of an earlier mining activity.
