The conducted experimental studies of the linear compressor concerned the cooling capacity, efficiency, and Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). Linear compressor performance tests were carried out for the supply voltage of 190–265 V and the supply frequency in the range of 45–65 Hz, which allowed the compressor to be tested outside its typical operating range. Modulation of the performance was achieved using an inverter. The full range of performance characteristics of a linear compressor was presented. The results were compared with a reciprocating compressor for similar displacement volume, which achieved lower EER values by an average of 38% for a pressure ratio above 1.7. The power consumption of a linear compressor is on average two times lower than that of a reciprocating compressor.

This study aims to optimize the 2-cylinder in-line reciprocating compressor crankshaft. As the crankshaft is considered the "bulkiest" component of the reciprocating compressor, its weight reduction is the focus of current research for improved performance and lower cost. Therefore, achieving a lightweight crankshaft without compromising the mechanical properties is the core objective of this study. Computational analysis for the crankshaft design optimization was performed in the following steps: kinematic analysis, static analysis, fatigue analysis, topology analysis, and dynamic modal analysis. Material retention by employing topology optimization resulted in a significant amount of weight reduction. A weight reduction of approximately 13% of the original crankshaft was achieved. At the same time, design optimization results demonstrate improvement in the mechanical properties due to better stress concentration and distribution on the crankshaft. In addition, material retention would also contribute to the material cost reduction of the crankshaft. The exact 3D model of the optimized crankshaft with complete design features is the main outcome of this research. The optimization and stress analysis methodology developed in this study can be used in broader fields such as reciprocating compressors/engines, structures, piping, and aerospace industries.

Industry often utilizes acoustical hoods to block noise emitted from reciprocating compressors. However, the hoods are large and bulky. Therefore, to diminish the size of the compressor, a compact discharge muffler linked to the compressor outlet is considered. Because the geometry of a reciprocating compressor is irregular, COMSOL, a finite element analysis software, is adopted. In order to explore the acoustical performance, a mathematical model is established using a finite element method via the COMSOL commercialized package. Additionally, to facilitate the shape optimization of the muffler, a polynomial neural network model is adopted to serve as an objective function; also, a Genetic Algorithm (GA) is linked to the OBJ function. During the optimization, various noise abatement strategies such as a reverse expansion chamber at the outlet of the discharge muffler and an inner extended tube inside the discharge muffler, will be assessed by using the artificial neural network in conjunction with the GA optimizer. Consequently, the discharge muffler that is optimally shaped will decrease the noise of the reciprocating compressor.

The paper presents results of the research related to the analysis of the thermodynamic and flow processes occurring in a prototype VC 20.96 two-stage liquid-cooled reciprocating compressor. The compressor has been developed and manufactured by H. Cegielski Poznan metal works in collaboration with the Poznan University of Technology. The research related to the VC compressor was realized within the KBN 3127/C.T07-6/2002 project titled “Development of design of type-series of reciprocating compressors and their implementation in production”. The basic task of the project was to develop two type-series of liquid- and air- cooled reciprocating compressors of the V- and W- arrangement, designed to serve as marine engine starters. The result of the design work was the manufacturing of two compressors: the VC 20.96 liquid-cooled compressor and the WP 18.80 air-cooled one. The main aim of the research described in this paper was to evaluate the efficiency of the cooling system which uses inter-coolers integrated with the compressing stages and the cooperation of the compressing stages in terms of pressure ratio distribution. Owing to the cooling method, the applied design assumptions enabled to develop a compact compressor fulfilling the assumed operating parameters.

Monitoring and diagnostics systems of machinery are increasingly used in many industries. Generally, these systems are responsible for such a machinery like steam turbines, pumps, fans, etc. The increase in efficiency as well as the growing interest of diagnostics systems has expanded the potential markets to other related industries such as mining or metallurgy. This paper presents efficient monitoring methods of machinery generating high vibration signal disturbances. The results have been developed by a diagnostic team, monitoring a reciprocating compressor, which is located on the Baltic Sea oil rig. Important feature of the compressor is existence of strong impacts in the vibration signals. These impulses introduce strong distortion to the signal spectrum. The paper shows that different faults require specific diagnostic methods. The paper shows example of selection of such a method. It is the application of the enhanced resolution envelope analysis for detection of the bearing faults.

Artykuł przedstawia przykłady zastosowania analizy obwiedni o podwyższonej rozdzielczości do wykrywania uszkodzeń łożysk tocznych.
