Risk management in construction enterprises in Śląskie and Małopolskie voivodships in Poland

Purpose: The publication is empirical in its character. The key purpose of the paper is to outline and discuss the results of the empirical research into risk in construction activities carried out by the surveyed contractors in Poland. The paper focuses, in particular, on the use of methods, techniques and tools by construction enterprises from Śląskie and Małopolskie voivodships to respond to the risks they encounter. Design/methodology/approach: The empirical research was conducted in form of a questionnaire interview. The research tools were developed based on in-depth studies of the scholarly literature (theory-cognitive dimension of the research). The paper also uses the methods of synthesis and deduction. In their discussions the authors draw on their own knowledge and experience which they have acquired over many years spent on researching risks faced by a wide range of organisations. Findings: The presented research findings provide the empirical verification of the theoretical background derived from the literature in the field. Research limitations/implications: The paper presents only the selected results of the empirical studies. These research findings concern specific categories of construction risk, which is regarded as a scientific and research category. Practical implications: The paper presents practical knowledge (utilitarian dimension of science) which has been verified empirically in the conducted research. This knowledge is referred to in the scholarly literature as Construction Risk Management (CRM). Originality/value: The empirical studies present an up-to-date status of the knowledge and awareness as demonstrated by the construction contractors participating in the survey. The research findings are presented for the purpose specified in the paper.

W aktywnym zarządzaniu procesem wiertniczym wykorzystuje się dane wynikające z identyfikacji i oceny ryzyka. Opisane w trzech pierwszych częściach artykułu metody postępowania pozwalają na przygotowanie planu reagowania na skutki ewentualnej materializacji czynników wyzwalających i zdarzeń będących późniejszą ich konsekwencją. W planie zarządzania ryzykiem projektu powinny znaleźć się m.in.: określenie stopnia komplikacji zadania pod kątem ryzyka, uszeregowana według wybranego priorytetu lista zdiagnozowanych i zmierzonych ilościowo ryzyk, oszacowanie prawdopodobieństwa osiągnięcia celów w postaci budżetu i harmonogramu.

In the active management of the drilling process, there is used the data acquired during the risk identification and assessment process. The risk management plan should consist of (amongst others): definition of the level of difficulty of the task (in terms of risk), the diagnosed and measured risks enlisted in accordance with the assigned priority and the estimation of the probability of achieving the goals in the form of a budget and a schedule.

Cały proces zarządzania ryzykiem został ujęty w jednym ze standardów kontroli zarządczej, który tworzy mechanizm sekwencji następujących po sobie czynności mających na celu identyfikację i ocenę ryzyka oraz określa sposoby reagowania na nie. Prawidłowo wdrożony i utrzymywany system zarządzania wspiera oraz doskonali identyfikację zagrożeń i szans, ustanawia solidne podstawy do podejmowania decyzji i planowania oraz doskonali mechanizmy kontroli. Jedną z wielu korzyści z wprowadzenia systemu zarządzania ryzykiem jest zaś m.in. zmniejszenie liczby nieprzewidzianych zdarzeń mających negatywny wpływ na działanie organizacji.

The process of risk management has been granted as a standard of management control, which creates a sequence mechanism to identify and assess the risk and describe ways to respond to it. Properly implemented and maintained management system supports and improves identification of risks and chances, establish solid background for decision-making and planning and improves control mechanism. While one of the many benefits from implementation of risk management system is reduction of unexpected events which have a negative impact on work in organization.
