Gdy bankrutuje fabryka - jej zarząd ogłasza upadłość, a pracownicy rozchodzą sie do domów. Jednak żadnej przeszłości nie da się ot tak , wymazać. W urbanistycznej tkance miasta pozostaje wrak, skorupa opuszczonej hali, magazynu, warsztatu. Co z nia zrobić, by przez lata nie straszyły opuszczone mury? Rozebrać?

The paper deals with the industrial heritage of Lodz, and with textile mills in particular. First, the development of terms industrial archaeology and industrial heritage within the European context is traced. Secondly, the present condition of the old textile mills of Lodz, resulting from recent economic changes is described. Then, a brief account is given of the history of preservation of industrial heritage in Poland from the first, late 19th century concepts up to the new, wider understanding of industrial heritage, as proposed in the newest project of the Cultural Heritage Act. The history is followed by a review of previous research dealing with industrial heritage of Lodz. The comparison of British and Polish circumstances and achievements indicates a wide range of similarities, although there are also important differences. The compared aspects fall into three categories: recording of industrial heritage and research; preservation of industrial heritage; re-use of buildings left by the industry . The review of all categories reveals that British experience might be a useful source of inspiration for comparable work in Lodz. The subject needs, however, further research enabling to draw detailed lessons.
