W ciągu ostatnich dwóch stuleci „racjonalne myślenie” było ciągle żywe w architekturze, nawet jeśli istniało w różnych formach; było przywoływane w architekturach, które również bardzo się od siebie różnią. Z drugiej strony, rzadko przywoływano wartości związane z intuicją. Intuicja nie jest jednak przeciwieństwem rozumu. Intuicja pojawia się pierwsza, rozum zaś symbolizuje „jak”. Rezultatem jest coś innego. Intuicja może dostarczyć pomysłów, rozum może dostarczyć wyjaśnień. Wyjaśnienia mogą być a priori, jeśli służą do podejmowania decyzji lub a posteriori, jeśli służą nadawaniu znaczenia całości. Oba wskazują metodę, a nie rezultat. Nie są prawdziwymi przeciwieństwami. Brak intuicji niekoniecznie jest pozbawiony pomysłów; a brak rozsądku różni się od bycia wbrew rozsądkowi... Nie sądzę, by istniały jakieś intuicyjne, a nawet racjonalne architektury, i widzimy tego wiele przykładów w ostatnich stuleciach. Być może lepiej jest unikać szaleństwa rozumu, ale rozsądne szaleństwo jest czasem najlepszym, na co możemy liczyć.

In the last two centuries, “rational thinking” has been continuously alive in architecture, even if in different forms; it has been recalled for architectures that are also very different from each other. Intuition-related values, on the other hand, have rarely been mentioned. But intuition is not in contrast to reason. Intuition comes first, reason represents “how”. The result is something else. Intuition can provide ideas, reason can provide explanations. The explanations can be a priori if they serve to make decisions, or a posteriori if they serve to give meaning to the whole. Both indicate the method, not the result. They have no real opposition. Lack of intuition is not necessarily void of ideas, and lack of reason is different from against reason... I don’t think there are any intuitional or even rational architectures, and we can see a number of examples in recent centuries. Perhaps it is better to avoid the madness of reason, but reasonable folly is sometimes the best we can hope for.

Czy racjonalność i intuicję można uznać za dwie strony tej samej monety? Jeśli współistnieją one w procesie projektowania, do czego się odnoszą się i czym wyróżniają? Jakiego rodzaju związek można ustalić między akcją wstępną pracy a jej faktycznym uruchomieniem, zgodnie z procedurami i technikami, które są spójne i konieczne dla jej konstrukcji? Wartość projektu architektonicznego przejawia się w ciągłym poszukiwaniu ekspresji sztuki, nawet jeśli, jak wiemy, architektura pełni także funkcje społeczne i obywatelskie. Uniwersalne znaczenia i kontekst odniesienia kulturowego, które zawsze były dziedzictwem projektu architektonicznego, coraz częściej przybierają wartość drugorzędną. Wydaje się, że problemy i koncepcje, takie jak: tradycja, pamięć, nowoczesność, inwencja i lokalizacja, utraciły jakiekolwiek prerogatywy badawcze kosztem znaczenia i zastosowania przypisywanego kompozycji architektonicznej i urbanistycznej w ogólnym procesie projektowania.

Can rational and intuitive be considered two sides of the same coin? If they coexist in the design process, what do they refer to and what do they stand out for? What kind of relationship can be established between the act of prefiguring the work and of putting it into operation according to procedures and techniques that are coherent and necessary for its construction? The value of an architectural project is shown by its being a continuous search for the expression of art, even if, as we know, architecture also has a social function and plays a civil role. The universal meanings and the cultural reference context, which have always been the heritage of the architectural project, are increasingly taking on a secondary value. Issues and concepts such as tradition, memory, modernity, invention, and location seem to have lost any research prerogative at the expense of the meaning and use attributed to the architectural and urban composition in the overall design process.

Racjonalna architektura reprezentuje wybór dziedziny, która dąży do wskazania dokładnego kierunku badań. Dyscyplinarne ramy odniesienia oparte na badaniach teoretycznych i projektowaniu zwykle stanowią racjonalną teorię projektowania architektonicznego, w której analityczny moment wiedzy jest punktem podstawowym, ale nie ostatecznym dla projektu, a jego wyniki są nadal nieprzewidywalne i związane z talentem i inteligencją. Aldo Rossi twierdzi, że istotnie: „Logiczną konstrukcją architektury jest zawód, teoretyczny i praktyczny korpus architektury, ale nie można go utożsamiać z rezultatem architektury.” Architektura jest dyscypliną, której można nauczyć i przekazywać, ale absolutnie konieczne jest zrozumienie, że nie jest to metoda, którą można zastosować, a doświadczenie, które wymaga zarówno zdolności logicznych jak i wyobraźni.

Rational architecture represents the choice of a field that seeks to point to a precise direction for research. A disciplinary framework of reference based on theoretical research and design which tend to constitute a rational theory of architectural design where the analytical moment of knowledge is for the project a primary but not definitive point whose results are stIl unpredictable and are linked to talent and intelligence. Indeed, for Aldo Rossi: “The logical construction of architecture is the profession, the theoretical and practical corpus of architecture, but it cannot be identified with the result of the architecture.” Architecture is a discipline that can be taught and transmitted but it is absolutely necessary to understand that this is not an applicable method, but an experience that requires logical abilities and imagination on the same plane.

Pomimo powracającego przeświadczenia, że powstający dziś świat jest zupełnie nowy i potrzebuje nowej estetyki, niemożliwa jest architektura całkowicie odcinająca się od poprzedników. Przykładem są współczesne dzieła, w których możemy znaleźć ślady idei racjonalistycznych. Ich twórcy sięgają do przeszłości do esencji architektury ukrytej w formach niezmiennych, typowych, rozpoznawalnych, opartych o stałe i czytelne zasady. Współcześni twórcy kontynuują idee racjonalistyczne drugiej połowy XX wieku, kontynuujące tradycje dalszej przeszłości.

Regardless of recurring conviction that the world today is completely new and needs new esthetic, architecture entirely distancing itself from the predecessors is impossible. Some specific contemporary works, with traces of rationalistic ideas can be an example of above-cited. Their creators reach to the past to the essence of architecture hidden in invariable, typical, recognizable forms, based on solid and readable rules. Contemporary creators continue rationalistic ideas of second half of 20th century, that have been continuing tradition of far distant past.

Nic się nie zmieniło, wszystko się zmieniło. Architektura teraz - na chwilę, na moment, nieledwie rzecz jednorazowego użytku, zmienia się szybko jak nigdy dotąd, pozbywając się narzędzi do paktowania z nieprzejednanym i nieuchronnym czasem. Niektórzy twierdzą, ze w tej sytuacji powrót reguł jest nieunikniony; pytanie, czy i w jakiej formie możliwy jest teraz.
