Mając na uwadze doświadczenia z realizacji inwestycji kolejowych w Polsce w poprzednich latach, można stwierdzić, iż ich przebieg jest obciążony wieloma specyficznymi czynnikami losowymi. Aby zminimalizować wystąpienie nieprzewidzianych, losowych, zagrożeń podczas przyszłych realizacji tych inwestycji, autorzy opracowali prostą w zastosowaniu metodę Railway Matrix of Risk Factors (RMRF) specjalnie dedykowaną do planowania inwestycji kolejowych. Prognozowanie realnych terminów oraz kosztów zakończenia inwestycji zostało oparte w niej na wiarygodnej bazie danych w zakresie konkretnych czynników ryzyka. Opracowanie metody było poprzedzone wieloma badaniami z udziałem licznych ekspertów nad identyfikacją oraz kwantyfikacją czynników ryzyka oraz weryfikacją w rzeczywistym procesie inwestycyjnym.

Considering the experiences from railway investment projects implementation in Poland in previous years, it can be concluded that they are burdened with numerous specific random factors. To minimise the occurrence of unforeseen, random risks during the future implementation of such investment projects, the authors have developed a simple Railway Matrix of Risk Factors (RMRF) specially dedicated for planning railway investment projects. Forecasting actual completion dates and costs for the investment project has been based on a reliable database for specific risk factors. The method's development has been preceded by numerous studies together with numerous experts in identification and quantification of risk factors and verification in an actual investment project process.

The new Lyon-Turin rail connection (a priority project for the European Union) lies at the intersection between the north-south and east-west axes of communication, uniting Europe. The Lyon-Turin link will help to complete the European rail network, both for passengers and freight. On a regional level, the new line will improve relations and exchanges between two important economic areas: Northern Italy (the plain of the Po and the Northern Alps) and the Rhone valley in France. Central to the project, the joint Franco-Italian stretch will include a major civil-engineering structure: the more than 50 km long tunnel between Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and the Susa Valley.

Crossrail is Europe's largest civil engineering construction project. A large and varied skills base is needed to build a project of the size and complexity of Crossrail and up to 14000 people will be needed by the project's supply chain at the peak of construction. Crossrail will run 118 km from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west, through new twin-bore 21 km tunnels under central London to Shenfi eld and Abbey Wood in the east. When Crossrail opens (2017-2018) it will increase London's rail-based transport network capacity by 10%, supporting regeneration across the capital, helping to secure London's position as a world leading financial centre, and cutting journey times across the city.
