Mediatheque or Centre of Knowledge and Culture - Case Study of Piotrków Trybunalski Mediatheque

In recent years, Piotrków Trybunalski has been enriched by an exceptional building of an innovative character. Designed by Daniel Frac, the 800th Anniversary Mediatheque is an innovative building and perhaps the most important architectural work in the region. This article presents a case study of the Piotrków mediatheque. Analysing it in a broader context, it is possible to pose a thesis on the re-evaluation of this type of facility. Their previous role as library and digital centres is changing more into an interactive centre of knowledge and culture. The article points out the role such buildings play in medium-sized and small towns and addresses the issue of architectural form and its symbolism.

Piotrków Trybunalski wzbogacił się w ostatnich latach o wyjątkowy obiekt o innowacyjnym charakterze. Zaprojektowana przez Daniela Frąca Mediateka Osiemsetlecia to nowatorski obiekt oraz być może najważniejsze dzieło architektoniczne w regionie. W artykule zostało przedstawione studium przypadku mediateki piotrkowskiej. Jej analiza w szerszym kontekście pozwoliła na postawienie tezy o przewartościowaniach w ramach tego rodzaju obiektów. Dotychczasowa ich rola jako centrów biblioteczno-cyfrowych zmienia się bardziej w interaktywne centrum wiedzy i kultury. W artykule wskazano rolę, jaką tego rodzaju obiekty odgrywają w średnich i małych miastach, a także podjęto zagadnienie formy architektonicznej i jej symboliki.

Główną funkcją sunnickich meczetów w Algierii jest jednoczenie wspólnoty wierzących – tzw. Ummah, w przeciwieństwie do kościołów chrześcijańskich, będących symbolicznymi domami Bożymi, w których świat ziemski łączy się ze sferą niebiańską. Według nauk islamu każde miejsce nadaje się do rozmowy z Bogiem, a budowanie jest stratą czasu i pieniędzy. Meczety pojawiły się na przestrzeni lat. Początkowo prosty model podwórza przeznaczonego do modlitwy proroka Mahometa w Medynie przerodził się w skomplikowaną i luksusowo urządzaną budowlę. Jako miejsca zbiorowej modlitwy meczety pełnią funkcję nie tylko religijną, ale także społeczną. Obecnie zostają także zaadaptowane jako obiekty użyteczności publicznej – szkoły czy noclegownie dla pielgrzymów.

The main function of Sunni mosques in Algeria is to unite the community of believers – the so-called Ummah. This is in contrast to Christian churches, which are symbolic houses of God, in which the earthly world connects with the heavenly sphere. According to the teachings of Islam, every place is suitable for conversation with God, and building is a waste of time and money. Mosques have appeared over the years. Initially, a simple model of a courtyard dedicated to the prayer of Prophet Muhammad in Medina turned into a complex and luxuriously arranged building. As places of collective prayer, mosques are not only religious but also social. Currently, they are also adapted to be public facilities such as schools or hostels for pilgrims.

An analysis of maintenance schedules for public facilities

We present a flexible, formal framework for maintenance scheduling for public facilities. Key features of the model include an accelerating deterioration scheme, a general utility measure, and real estate market effects in the salvage function. The model is rich enough to capture a range of stylistic scenarios pertaining to public facilities while remaining simple enough to allow formal analysis of the optimal maintenance schedule. Based on our analysis, we draw a phase diagram that classifies the generic behavior of the optimal solution. We illustrate our analysis in numerical examples that highlight essential trade-offs and the time dependence of the facility maintenance problem. Under simplifying assumptions, we also derive the basics of an exact solution.
