Lasting relationships between settlements and water, especially a river, are characteristic of the majority of world cultures. Creation of the major ancient civilizations was closely connected with the existence of major rivers. When founding a city on a riverbank, the founders were above all guided by practical factors. Parallel to this the cult of the river developed. Along with the development of cities, composition and aesthetic roles of a river in a city became more important, especially in its central part, namely the city centre. River channels within cities underwent some changes. Along with the physical ones in the riverbed, a river was frequently "shifted" in a city plan to a down-town area. A river as a separation strip, area, or boundary, shapes both positive and negative components of a down-town landscape. A city centre river valley has the potential to create and model public areas, which form a positive image of a city in the users` minds. It may highlight its beauty or mitigate the imperfections of urbanized surroundings. The essential goal for those who contemporarily shape down-town river valleys is not to let a valley separate or negatively distinguish the areas situated on both its sides. Instead, it should create a friendly and human-oriented dow--town public area.

W artykule podjęto problematykę związaną z funkcją informacyjną przestrzeni miejskiej, przede wszystkim w odniesieniu do przestrzeni publicznych. Zagadnienie to dotyczy szeroko rozumianej informacji, którą miasto przekazuje użytkownikowi. Jest to informacja wielopłaszczyznowa, odnosząca się nie tylko do wymiaru materialnego, ale przede wszystkim symbolicznego, w odróżnieniu od MSI - miejskiego systemu informacji. MSI jest bowiem związany z warstwą wizualną i percepcyjną w najbardziej dosłownym znaczeniu tego słowa, a więc znakami informacyjnymi, np. zakazu. Omawiana w pracy tematyka rozpatrywana jest w powiązaniu z aspektem atrakcyjności przestrzeni miasta, której odpowiedni poziom zapewnia także jego użytkownikom odpowiednią jakość życia. Zarysowana w artykule problematyka oraz metodologia badawcza znajdą swoje rozwinięcie w aktualnie opracowywanej przez autorkę dysertacji doktorskiej, dotyczącej wybranych aspektów atrakcyjności przestrzeni miejskiej.

The city exists as a specific sign-system. On the hand the city space communicates with inhabitants using visible signs such as architecture, information and direction signs, billboards and posters. On the other hand it speaks through the symbols of socalled hidden dimension hidden dimension that can only be felt not seen. The architecture should be a synonym of urban order so as to provide the adequate quality of residents' life. Information function of the inner (center) space could be a basis for contemporary urban planning. The physiognomy form is an important source of information about the condition of the surrounding and helps to create high quality space for living.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie zastosowania technologii komunikacyjnych i informatycznych w przestrzeni publicznej miasta. Termin "mediated space" oznacza miejsca, gdzie zastosowanie nowych mediów elektronicznych ma wpływ na formalne i funkcjonalne relacje przestrzenne. Przykładowe projekty, będące jeszcze w fazie eksperymentów pokazują, jak media te mogą stymulować interakcje ludzi w przestrzeni publicznej miast.

The article presents the use of information and telecommunication technologies (ICT) in urban public spaces. The term "mediated space" is used to describe places, where new electronic media are used extensively, and where they influence formal and functional spatial relations. Project examples, mostly experimental installations, show how such media can be used to stimulate interactive behaviour in urban public spaces.
