Maritime transport employees’ psychological defense mechanisms and self-management

Following the principle that “transport does not carry the goods, people do”, this study identifies the problematical aspects of professional experience of seafarers as people of maritime transport, as well as personalities in terms of expression of their psychological defense mechanisms and their insights into the possibilities for self-management. The type of the research is a qualitative, pilot and expert study, which has indicated that seafarers are able to recognize their psychological defense mechanisms and can define them quite clearly on the basis of their personal experience of living and working on board a ship. The abilities of seafarers’ intellectual consideration about their experience are acceptable from a point of view of scientific, namely, psychoeducational logic. The development of self-leadership and transformational leadership skills may help to partially control defensive reactions, and should be an appropriate tool to psychologically stabilize the seafarers’ professional activities in terms of possibilities to create more constructive relationships among them in a team while achieving the common purpose of transportation.

Fuzzy approach using experts’ psychological conditions to estimate the criteria importance for the assessment of innovative projects risk

The difficulty of innovation risk assessment makes it necessary to use a multi-criteria analysis. Innovative projects are related to unstructured problems and the uncertainty, therefore, the use of fuzzy logic in the innovation risk assessment is analyzed. This paper proposes a method of determining the weights of criteria in order to innovation risk assessment. The weights are determined by 5 general criteria and 14 detailed criteria of innovation risk assessment. The proposed method is an extension of the fuzzy AHP method. The extension consists in taking into consideration the group decision-making approach with experts’ psychological conditions. The groups of experts have been chosen based on an elaborated form. The form makes it possible to characterize the persons within the scope of different psychological conditions. The proposed method provides objective and rational decision-making. The paper presents also a comparison of results with the fuzzy AHP method without the group decision making. The weights obtained by the proposed method are more diversified and bring out the most important criteria.

Risk assessment is an important tool of risk management. It must take various aspects into consideration. The article discusses quantitative and psychological risk assessment. A psychological aspect is presented as well, with a special consideration of accepting the risk by a decision-maker, which has a significant influence on the manner the risk is assessed and taken. Whether a decision maker will assess the risk as high or low and therefore will be more or less inclined to take it, is a product of his personality traits, perception, situational characteristics and the available set of information.

Ocena ryzyka jest ważnym zadaniem zarządzania ryzykiem. Ocena ta musi uwzględniać różne aspekty. W artykule zostanie rozważona ilościowa i psychologiczna ocena ryzyka. Opisany aspekt psychologiczny ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem akceptacji ryzyka przez decydenta, ma ogromny wpływ na sposób szacowania ryzyka i podejmowania go. To, czy decydent wysoko (lub nisko) oceni ryzyko, a zatem będzie mniej lub bardziej skłonny je podjąć, jest zależne od wypadkowej cech jego osobowości, percepcji, cech sytuacyjnych oraz dostępnego zbioru informacji.

The article presents the history of attack and defence in limited visibility conditions in military conflicts of the 20th century. The author showed the attack and defence in night in conditions, and also technical developments applied successfully in this kind of actions in the 20th century that influenced them. The final part of the article concentrates on psychological aspects on contemporary battlefield in limited visibility conditions.
