Musical scales may be interpreted as specific increasing sequences of real numbers. Periodic scales, i.e. musical scales whose pattern is periodic, feature in this article. Of special interest are regular scales for which seven properties are given in four theorems which are new results, involving the concepts of: the period of a scale, the length of the period of a scale, a pattern, being homomorphous, a transposition and being in the same key. This paper considers the idea of musical scales in general, hence it is possible to consider more complex musical scales not just those using the standard twelve-tone equal temperament, and also proposes tools to investigate traditional musical scales as Messiaen’s modes of limited transposition [4, p. 58], the major and the minor scales as well as ancient Greek scales inherited by medieval Western music. The paper also goes beyond the notion of musical scale and contains a new interesting result which allows us to determine when one can form a series from a shorter sequence of sounds by transposing the sequence.

Skale muzyczne są tu interpretowane jako specyficzne rosnące ciągi liczb rzeczywistych. Skale okresowe, tzn. skale muzyczne, których wzorzec jest okresowy, odgrywają w tym artykule kluczową rolę. Szczególnie interesujące pośród nich są skale regularne, które scharakteryzowano na siedem sposobów w 4 twierdzeniach, które są moimi oryginalnymi wynikami, używając takich pojęć jak: okres skali, długość okresu skali, wzorzec, bycie homomorficznym, transpozycja oraz bycie w tej samej tonacji. W tej pracy rozważono pojęcie skali muzycznej bardziej ogólnie, nie ograniczając się tylko do skal w systemie rówomiernie temperowanym. Ponadto za proponowano narzędzia umożliwiające badanie tradycyjnych skal muzycznych takich jak modie Messiaena, skale dur i moll oraz starożytne skale greckie odziedziczone przez średniowieczną muzykę europejską. Praca ta wykracza poza pojęcie skali muzycznej i zawiera nowy rezultat, który umożliwia ustalenie, kiedy można utworzyć serię z krótszego ciągu dźwięków transponując go.
