Nanotechnology is now considered a frontier in science and is likely to produce a new revolution in our lives in the forthcoming years, a revolution even more far reaching than that created by computers and the internet. In the recent years very few areas of scientific research have had such a broad range of applications as nanotechnology. One of the most rapidly developing branches of nanotechnology is nanophotonics, the field that deals with interaction of light with materials on a nanometer scale. This interaction leads to a variety of new physical effects which are the basis of novel optoelectronic devices. The basic ideas and device concepts in the field of nanophotonics are discussed.
