By "multifunctional museum complexes" author means urban complexes with predominant function of a gallery or a museum (or at least equal to other cultural and educational functions), combined with very wide range of servicing functions. Due to economical changes, but also because of changing of the human needs of spending free time, they are very characteristic on the edge of the 21st Century. Multifunctional museum complex, is probably the most rational and up to date model of organizing the contemporary museum in the era of globalization of culture and information. It offers very wide range of services, as well as wide range of emotions to it's clients. Only such complexes could be competitive with suburban malls and multiplexes and please very different client's needs. The architecture of the buildings, together with the composition of surrounding public space are two of the most important features of the museum complex. They become to play the role of the marketing element. Multifunctional museum complexes have been built at the both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. As two examples of approaching the urban context, author have choose two complexes - Getty Center in Los Angeles and Museums Quartier in Vienna - which have been recently finished in completely different cities, different cultures and circumstances.

The large city is the most natural product and sign of overpopulation of the Earth. We live together in congested, dense clusters, next to each other. A modern man is a child of the large city used to its excess of impressions. He does not hear noise. He notices silence and it causes his anxiety. However the city in its diversity promises that some places we find for ourselves are to give us fascination and joy and are abound in surprise. Therefore the new „Cities of Music" in Paris and in Rome, which was build last time are located in the greenery. They create a special „city within city" where life is going in another time, there is another feeling, atmosphere. In this space the new architectural forms are important. Euclidean geometry insufficient as a base to define spatial forms and masses of buildings. In domitable strength of the straight line modernism used rotations and twists obeying the disigning follies of,the computer. Modernity in architecture means merging architecture with nature and landscape as well as ceation of artificially natural environment. Architectural for the future is to be shaped by fractal geometry and its forms similar to natural ones. Visions of future architecture amount to searching for stunning form. To create modernity forms architects decides to use soft, undulating lines or rectangular plans.
