The objective of this study was to model the physical and mechanical properties of 100% cotton slub yarns commonly used in denim and other casual wear. Statistical models were developed using central composite experimental design of the response surface methodology. Yarn’s linear density, slub thickness, slub length and pause length were used as the key input variables while yarn strength, elongation, coefficient of mass variation, imperfections and hairiness were used as response/output variables. It was concluded that yarn strength and elongation increased with increase in linear density and pause length, and decreased with increase in slub thickness and slub length. Yarn mass variation and total imperfections increased with increase in slub thickness and pause length, whereas yarn imperfections and hairiness decreased with increase in slub length. It was further concluded that due to statistically significant square and interaction effects of some of the input variables, only the quadratic model instead of the linear models can adequately represent the relationship between the input and the output variables. These statistical models will be of great importance for the industrial personnel to improve their productivity and reduce sampling.

The present study was conducted to develop a credible approach to determine the quality of ring spun and slub yarns by virtue of criteria incorporating combinations of the fundamental fiber characteristics. Critical yarn parameters are to be investigated. The values of these tested properties were introduced into a database that ranked the quality of the yarn against industry standards. The paper investigates the possibilities of using the global optimization superimposed diagram response surface methodology in order to identify the spinner feasibility conditions across the customer yarn quality requirements. The spinner approach consists of optimizing the yarn count and twist. We have also studied the customer approach to optimize the yarn responses simultaneously by the use of the desirability functions. The response optimizer searches for a combination of input variables that jointly optimize the set of the responses by satisfying the customer requirements for each response in the set.

The basic parameters describing structure and tensile properties of slub fancy yarn produced on the ring-twisting frame have been characterised. They differ in the twist between core yarns and nominal linear density of roving periodically introduced into the yarn. On the basis of experimental results, the functions of multiple regression have been assessed and verification of statistic hypotheses has been car¬ried out. The important influence of the linear density of roving and twist between cores on the linear density and breaking force of slub yarn has been determined.

Wyprodukowano 16 rodzajów nitek płomienistych różniących się pod względem skrętu występującego pomiędzy przędzami rdzeniowymi oraz nominalna masą liniową niedoprzędu wprowadzanego okresowo pomiędzy rdzenie. Zbadano strukturę i wpływ właściwości mechanicznych na jednokierunkowe rozciąganie tego rodzaju nitek wielokrotnych. W oparciu o uzyskane wyniki doświadczeń przeprowadzono opisową analizę statystyczna oraz wnioskowanie statystyczne uzyskanych modelów regresji wielokrotnej. Stwierdzono, że w grupie analizowanych nitek fantazyjnych istotny wpływ na masę liniową i siłę zrywającą nitki płomienistej ma masa liniowa niedoprzędu oraz skręt pomiędzy nitkami rdzeniowymi.
