The polychrome decorations of the Warsaw's Old Town have been recognised as the essential elements that contribute to the justification of its Outstanding Universal Value.This decision is a guideline that obliges to preserve the original polychromies and also determines the technological method of their conservation. In practice, preserving the authenticity of the traditional wall painting techniques puts contractors to task of conserving the relics of the original decorations and plasters from the 50s and 60s. The latter however, are not perceived as valuable assets. The degree of the destruction appear to be a sufficient justification for their complete removal. For that reason the elevations, being next renovated with the help of modern preparations lose their old-town character. The article raises the problem both of underestimation of the value of the original fabric created during the reconstruction of the Old Town as well as abandoning the traditional technologies employed originally in the monument.

A complex of wooden churches in Olesno district constitutes a rich collection of various types of wooden Silesian architecture. Due to its specific location on the border of several districts and geographical regions, it is a rich source of knowledge about transformations and influences of various building techniques and traditions. The study deals with historical and geographical conditions underlying the process of erecting a group of Opole churches. Further considerations are based upon an analysis of the thematic literature comprising origins of an interest in the tradition of wooden Silesian architecture dating back to the mid-19th century on the German territories. In its further parts, the article tackles issues of history and architecture as well as the interior decor of the structures situated in the area of the district. The study also includes these buildings which were destroyed during the last twenty years due to destructive activity of man. Their history illustrates the validity of all the restoring and protective measures which were taken in the recent years in order to save the still existing monuments. There is an annex to the study in the form of a list of monuments which exemplify the changes that occurred in the post war period illustrating territorial changes of Olesno district along with a slow process of destroying the wooden architecture of this region. Additional information is an extract from the Opole district monument register showing what sort of actions were taken just after the war aimed at protecting the heritage of the regained territories.

Zespół drewnianych kościołów znajdujących się w powiecie oleskim stanowi bogaty przegląd typów drewnianej architektury Śląska. Ze względu na swoje specyficzne położenie na granicy kilku województw i krain geograficznych jest on obszernym źródłem wiedzy o transformacjach i wpływach różnych technik i tradycji budowlanych. W pracy omówione zostały uwarunkowania historyczno-geograficzne, jakie przyczyniły się do powstania grupy kościołów opolskich. Podstawą dalszych rozważań stała się analiza literatury tematu, obejmująca genezę zainteresowania tradycją śląskiego budownictwa drewnianego, sięgającą połowy XIX w. na terenie Niemiec. Dalszą część pracy stanowi omówienie historii i architektury oraz wystroju wnętrzarskiego obiektów znajdujących się na terenie powiatu. W opracowaniu zostały również uwzględnione obiekty, które w ciągu ostatnich dwudziestu lat uległy zniszczeniu wskutek destrukcyjnej działalności człowieka. Ich historia dowodzi słuszności wszystkich działań konserwatorskich i zabezpieczających, które zostały podjęte w ostatnich latach dla ratowania zabytków jeszcze istniejących. Aneksem do opracowania są listy zabytków będące świadectwem zmian, jakie zachodziły w okresie powojennym, obrazujące zarówno zmiany terytorialne powiatu oleskiego, jak i powolny proces niszczenia drewnianej architektury tego regionu. Dodatkową informację stanowi wypis z rejestru zabytków województwa opolskiego, świadczący o podejmowanych zaraz po wojnie działaniach mających na celu ochronę dziedzictwa ziem odzyskanych.
