Improving the energy performance of buildings has thus become a major challenge, as the building sector is now one of the main sources of energy consumption and one of the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Faced with these alarming challenges, current building design in the north is based on minimizing heat loss. However, this logic is not necessarily the most relevant in southern countries, characterized by excessive heat and insufficient, variable rainfall. The best way to achieve this is through sustainable design, with its intrinsic, energy_saving qualities, exploited by effective modeling. This article focuses on ideas and innovations that are helping to overcome these challenges. The results of introducing a porch into building design represent best practice in arid zones and beyond in terms of how it is thermally insulated. This has resulted in a significant reduction in thermal load in the energy ratio of up to 53.55%. This latest research aims to provide construction professionals with concrete examples of the design process, its technical feasibility, optimization and digitization based on climatic data from the arid zone.

Social housing in Algeria is carried out with state budget funds in order to eliminate social inequalities and guarantee a decent life to the citizen. However, delays have been observed in the realization. This study aims to examine the main causes and develop guidelines to effectively mitigate delays. Through an in-depth analysis of the literature and formal interviews on the topic of potential risks with construction experts, a list of 67 delay factors was identified. Data was collected through an online questionnaire via Google Forms and semi-structured interviews of a sample professionals established in Algeria. A total of 59 valid responses were analyzed and classified by SPSS software. The results indicate that the 5 most critical causes are: "Delay in payment", "Slow change orders in extra works", "Ineffective planning and scheduling", "Slow change orders in extra quantities", and "Difficulties in financing the project by contractor". Though, the correct implementation of the measures suggested by this study allows government authorities and professionals to deal with the 10 most critical causes that have favored the occurrence of delays in order to successfully implement similar construction projects.

Planning the course of cumulative cost curves and effectively monitoring the implementation process and the incurred financial outlays are still significant problems in the management of construction projects. This is particularly noticeable during the execution phase of construction works. Therefore, it is worthwhile to correctly determine the shape of the cost curve before starting this stage and to periodically examine its fitting to the scheduled course of the budgeted cost curve, the envelope of cost curves characterised by the best-fit curve. There are many methods of forecasting and estimating the costs of construction works, but they are very often complicated and require the decision-maker to use and elaborate mathematical tools. The aim of the research was to determine the shape and course of the cost curves for selected construction projects. Based on the analysis of the collected data on investment projects in 3 facilities research groups (collective housing, hotels and retail service facilities), an original attempt was made to determine the best fit curve and the area of the curve, which in turn indicates the limits of the correct planning of the cumulative costs of construction projects. The Three Sigma rule was applied, correlations and determinants were determined, and the area of the cost curves was described with a third degree polynomial. The conducted research showed that: 1. the optimal formula for determining the best-fit curve, which allow to determine the cost and time of construction works, is a 3-degree polynomial; 2. cost curves, within a certain bounding box, determine the area of the most likely cash flow; 3. when planning the course of a cost curve, it is advisable to use the bounding box of cost curves rather than a single, model, theoretical, or empirical mathematical expression describing the cost curve.

The execution of building projects should be planned in a realistic time, at the assumed cost and quality, and take into account the risk of the contract parties. However, even the best-planned construction projects are exposed to the risk of delays. The article reviews causes of delays in the construction projects identified both in the world and in Poland. The consequences of delays, regardless of the responsible party, should be clearly spelled out in the contracts. Financial penalties for delays are commonly used in agreements for construction works, and their level, according to the presented analyses, is usually higher in the public than in the private sector. Attention has been also paid to the few models presented in the literature that make it possible to predict delays and prevent their effects. It seems that this is an interesting direction for further research.

Many research efforts have identified funding as a critical factor responsible for the delays in the execution of construction projects. These funding challenges affect the client and contractors alike. However, there is limited information on why delays occur in sponsored projects with evidently adequate funding. Therefore, the study focuses on exploring the factors that impact the cash flow during the execution of sponsored construction projects. The multiple-site case-study method of qualitative research was adopted, involving five universities benefiting from the infrastructure funding provided by a government agency in Nigeria. The Delphi technique was used for data collection and analysis, complemented with interviews. The findings identified six factors causing the delays. They were divided into internal and external factors. The internal factors are faulty contractor selection processes resulting in delays by contractors and the failure to complete appropriate phases of a project. The external factors include the delays in the project management system of the funding agency in terms of inspection, monitoring, evaluation and progress certification. The research identified that the combined effect of internal and external factors negatively impacts the project cash flow, which in turn influences project delivery delays. Therefore, this study recommends improvements in the in-house contractor selection processes and the decentralisation of the project inspection, monitoring and evaluation operations of the funding agency. This will facilitate timely inspection, audit, and progress certification, enabling the early release of the second tranche of the project fund. This will ameliorate the negative effects arising due to low cash flow and associated delays in project delivery.

Communication in the construction sector is complex, especially in the design phase, that if not properly handled, can reduce productivity. This topic is best studied in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to diverse religion, ethnicity and nationalities. The research in this area is considerably increased due to the rapid construction growth during the last two decades. In this context, this research investigates the importance of communication in the construction sector, especially in the design phase. It also investigates project managers’ crucial role in utilizing communication referred to methods among their team members. A questionnaire survey was conducted where 146 respondents were collected and analysed using several statistical methods. Results revealed the importance of communication during the design stage. The most important channels of communication are those among the design team from different disciplines, then successively, consultant (site team) and contractor. The importance of best practices, such as hiring a coordinator between all design departments to reduce conflict and enhance communication, has been emphasized, and holding meetings is mostly the optimum method of communication.

Buildings collapse in the Nigerian major urban cities continues to engender an excessive number of fatalities, injuries and property damage. The collapse of building infrastructure, though prominent in developing economies, is a worldwide issue. Building developments collapse at the construction stages and in some cases after commissioning. Examples abound in recent times in Abuja and Lagos. The major problem is the unquantifiable resources wasted when building construction development collapses. If the answer to this endemic problem is proper project management, it becomes imperative to institutionalize its activities in Nigeria. Building Collapse is an occurrence that has been notorious over the decades. It is caused by many factors which have their great impact on the lives and properties of man. This study reviews current causes in the building industry. In view of this development, this study is aimed at demonstrating how real estate project management strategy helps in building collapse. Data from the primary source were basically from the designed instrument, which were distributed to the population of 100 professionals in the building industries. In this paper, it was concluded that the key causes of building collapse are weak/faulty foundations, inefficient stringent quality control in material utilization, and management, boycotting the professionals, absence of proper site investigation, the absence of proper site investigation and the engagement of inexperienced personnel. The aim of the study was to identify the factors influencing the occurrence of construction disasters in Nigeria in order to prevent them in the future. However, the analysis of the results gathered, reveal that, there was variance in opinions, as to the causes of building collapse among professionals in an attempt to exonerate themselves from the blame for building collapse. These were classified as the areas in the building sector that were prone to building collapse. Therefore, this study claims that the above-listed causes of building collapse are predominant in the Nigerian construction industry.

Construction objects arise during the implementation of construction projects. Participants in these projects are interested in taking systematic actions to improve the state of occupational safety and health protection. The effectiveness of these activities requires that they be carried out as part of a comprehensive system of managing the construction project implementation process. The safety management and health protection system is part of the overall project management system, which includes: organizational structure, planning, responsibility, rules of conduct, procedures, processes and resources and requires analysis of safety and health protection issues in its individual areas, phases and stages. This is primarily due to the fact that proper management is the most effective way to ensure an adequate level of safety and health protection (S&HP), desirable both due to the need to comply with legal provisions in force in construction, social expectations, and the possibility of obtaining positive economic effects by individual process participants in the scale of the entire construction project. The article proposes a theoretical model of the built undertaking that can be used to recognize the state of bioses. The model distinguishes parts, activities and areas in accordance with the logical course of the process, which was assigned to individual stages of the project. A research tool - RADAR S&HP - was developed to identify the factors affecting S&HP. To assess the condition of bioses, an analytical and mathematical model of the examined undertaking was formulated to ultimately determine the directions of preventive actions in the field of safety and health protection at individual stages, phases and areas of the construction project implementation process.

The evaluation of building design documentation is usually limited to consideration of cost and duration of works needed to execute a designed object. However, factors as safety of works, extent of mechanization of works, and other good or bad sides of construction methods needed to be implemented as per the analyzed design, are also considered, but normally without any measures. The method presented in this paper allows to evaluate the construction methods, as specified in the analyzed design documentation, using the points assigned to seven defined evaluation criteria. The final, total number of points represents the technological quality and feasibility of the construction processes and materials specified in the evaluated design documentation.
