Experimentally deformed sandstone specimens are used to study the onset, localization and mature stages of faults and fractures. These rupture mechanisms are studied through image processing of thin sections. Poorly defined grain boundaries, often observed in our sandstones, necessitate to create a specific processing algorithm. It allows us to quantify the changes of the grain size on each thin section, aspect ratio and preferred orientation generated by the progressive localization of the shear band.
