Quo vadis power engineering? A slow transition from centralised power generation to distributed power generation and what about Poland?

Is the world’s power engineering at a crossroads? Does the rapid development of new emerging fields such as the Internet of Things, smart city or e-mobility make us take a completely different point of view on the world’s energy future? What are our visions and development forecasts related to this? Who is right, Exxon Mobil Corporation or the visionary investor Elon Musk? The author of this article is trying to find answers to these and many other questions. In the long-term perspective, a transition from centralised power generation to distributed power generation seems to be inevitable, and that is the central message of this article. The article also presents the situation of the Polish power engineering against the background of global trends, as well as proposals for solving the smog problem using anti-smog technologies developed at the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Gdańsk and by launching a pilot project that will cover 1,000 households equipped with these technologies. The author and his closest co-workers recommend equipping boilers, including both older and newer ones, with low-power electrostatic precipitators. In this way, one can burn low-quality fuels while keeping the emission of airborne dust at a low level. It is a quick and not pricey solution to the smog problem.

This paper is devoted to forecasts relating to the development of urbanized areas, human habitats, and residential architecture on our Earth. According to the Author, 21st century is a century of a new different approach to issues connected with shaping a city and diversified new forms of residence satisfying all expectations as a result of new current challenges, e.g. the ones connected with considerable climatic changes, protection of natural environment, the rate of natural increase or necessary needs, connected e.g. with the revitalization of degraded urban areas, etc.

Rynek gazu (RG) jak i gazowa energetyka w Polsce są wciąż przedmiotem zmian w kierunku dalszej liberalizacji. Budowa wspólnego rynku gazu ziemnego w UE jest rozpoczęta, ale analizy sytuacji na rynku świadczą o słabości realizacji liberalizacji w kontekście cen za gaz. Bieżące zmiany w Polsce muszą dotyczyć harmonizacji przepisów, określeniu wyboru ścieżek dla wprowadzanych przemian oraz zakresu i głębokości otwarcia rynku na konkurencję przy uwzględnieniu niestabilności cen. Proces tworzenia wspólnego rynku wymaga wielu nowych inicjatyw UE w sprawie wdrożenia efektywnej konkurencji oraz odwagi. W artykule przedstawiono najważniejsze kierunki zmian i rozwoju realizowanych strategii w krajach UE, w tym Polski. Artykuł omawia też aktualny stan dla kogeneracji energii i gazu.

The gas market is still a subject of changing toward a more complete liberalization. Construction of a common market of natural gas in the EU is still not completed, but the analyses of the market situation show many weaknesses of implementing liberalization. They result from the lack of sufficient harmonization of regulations and too many arbitrary path selections, scope and depth of market opening to competition. The process of the common market building requires new EU initiatives on harmonization of regulations and implementation of effective competition. The most important directions of changes and development carried out in the strategy, both in EU countries and Poland has been presented. At the end of the paper some final remarks have been formulated.
