The objective of this study were hides of low black and white race. The study deals with changes inprotein compositions of cow hide in the beamhouse processes. The following contents were determined: dry weight of hide, general protein, collagen, amount of leaching proteins, degrass, mineral components, and also shrinkage temperature was determined. It was found that beamhouse processes caused great changes in protein constitution of cow hide. It was established a precise connection between shrinkage temperature and collagen content and after following processes the shrinkage temperature was decreased. It was observed that total protein losses during processes preparing to chrome, aldehyde and bark tanning was followig: ovrall protein - 20,3%, collagen -13,7%. Amounts of leching proteins were following: chrome tanning - 1%, aldehyde tanning - 0,8% and bark tanning - 0,0%. It was established that leaching proteins are precipitated and seated again in cow hides by bark tannins. In this way cow hide becomes more filled. Summarizing, in order to obtain compacted leather with the best quality it is necessary to use combined chrome - bark tanning processes.
