The aim of the article is to identify the extent and the ways of applying the concept of the process management in Polish or-ganizations oriented to TQM. To achieve this goal, an experience analysis of 12 chosen Polish Quality Award's finalists was performed. For this group, an evaluation of the achievements was carried out followed by identification of the most basic categories for the actions taken in the area of process management.
On the basis of surveys carried out among businesses of the Podkarpacie province, the authors demonstrate that an appointment of a process manager changes the way a business operates. The changes affect the organisational structure, roles and responsibilities and - consequently - the corporate culture. Process managers are the managers of tomorrow, who have the aptitude and organisational authority for effective and efficacious enhancement of business processes
The article offers a review of the most important - and still relatively infrequently referred to in professional literature - studies on the role of process orientation in managing small and medium-sized enterprises. The review leads the author to several conclusions that - with the growing popularity of process-oriented approach - should be of interest to both the researchers and practitioners involved with improving the management methods in SMEs sector.
