Artykuł jest głosem w dyskusji do artykułu „Aktywizacja gospodarcza rzek jako jeden z aspektów gospodarki wodnej” z nr. 1/2016 r. Definiuje szerzej gospodarkę wodną, pokazując obok problemów żeglugi także inne aspekty tej dziedziny. Odnosząc się do żeglugi wskazuje uwarunkowania merytoryczne i ekonomiczne, jakie są barierą dla rozwoju żeglugi w Polsce.

The article is a voice in the discussion on the "Economic activation of rivers as one of the water management aspects" article, published in the issue No. 1/2016. It provides a broader definition of water management, pointing to other than navigation problems aspects of this field. Referring to navigation, it indicates the substantive and economic considerations constituting an obstacle for navigation development in Poland.

Wiek XXI staje się wiekiem wody, tak jak wiek XX był wiekiem ropy. W artykule zaprezentowano liczne zagadnienia z tym związane, w tym zmiany klimatyczne i demograficzne; zaakcentowano postępującą urbanizację. Wskazano przyczyny złego stanu globalnej gospodarki wodno-ściekowej. Omówiono realizację milenijnych celów rozwoju w aspekcie dostępu do podstawowych warunków sanitarnych i do bezpiecznej wody do picia, jak też konflikty wodne i globalne problemy wodne.

The 21st century is becoming a century of water, just as the 20th century was the century of petroleum. The article presents numerous related issued, including climate and demographic changes; it also emphasises the growing urbanisation. The author indicates reasons for poor condition of the global water and sewage management, discusses the realisation of Millennium Development Goals in the scope of access to basic sanitary conditions and safe drinking water, as well as water conflicts and global water problems.
