Aparaty cyfrowe oraz możliwości obliczeniowe terminali GSM typu "smart phone" umożliwiają wstępną segmentację elementów obrazu i obniżenie kosztów transferu obrazu cyfrowego w aplikacjach wielowarstwowych. Możliwość analizy obrazu w urządzeniu mobilnym umożliwia zastosowanie go np. do osobistej identyfikacji produktu. Użytkownik mógłby uzyskać informacje mogące mieć znaczenie np. w unikaniu produktów alergizujących. Artykuł omawia algorytmy segmentacji obrazu specyficzne dla środowiska urządzenia mobilnego. Zostanie przedstawiona prototypowa aplikacja J2ME realizująca akwizycję obrazu oraz jego wstępną segmentację pod kątem rozpoznawania kodu kreskowego i cyfr EAN13.

New GSM terminals are equipped with digital cameras. "Smart phones" offer better bandwidth and multimedia capabilities. Image acquisition and segmentation, while performed on wireless devices, broaden area of mobile applications. Image resolution and computation power of GSM devices are too limited for a complete image recognition system. However, pre-processing performed locally can drastically reduce costs of further data transfers between mobile clients and internet-based servers (in a multi-tier image recognition system). Image segmentation based on mobile platforms can be used to develop a system for personal product identification. This can be performed through the analysis of EAN13 barcode standard images. Based on the product ID, a potential user could obtain information on product composites and additives. The ID might be valuable, for instance in identification of allergenic additives in the processed food. The aim of the paper is to present the recent research results on mobile image processing based on GSM terminals. We propose the image processing algorithms appropriate for resource limited mobile environment. The tests were performed on the J2ME application performing image acquisition and segmentation of the EAN13 barcode.
