Impact of time series clustering on fuel sales prediction results

The purpose of the paper is to check the impact of data clustering in the process of predicting demand. We checked different ways of adding information about similar datasets to the forecasting process and we grouped the measurements in multiple ways. The experiments were executed on 50 time series describing fuels sales (gasoline and diesel sales) on 25 petrol stations from an international company. We described the data preparation process and feature extraction process. In the 9 presented experiments, we used the XGBoost algorithm and some typical time series forecasting methods (ARIMA, moving average). We showed a case study for two datasets and we discussed the practical usage of the tested solutions. The results showed that the solution which used XGBoost model utilising data gathered from all available petrol stations, in general, worked the best and it outperformed more advanced approaches as well as typical time series methods.

Artykuł stanowi podsumowanie prowadzonych pod koniec 2017 roku badań mających na celu zweryfikowanie poprawności zbieranych danych przez automatyczny system zliczania pasażerów, wykorzystywany przez MPK SA w Krakowie. Stanowi on także wstęp do szerszych badań mających na celu opracowanie modeli prognozowania popytu w miejskim transporcie zbiorowym z wykorzystaniem danych z systemu automatycznego. W artykule zaprezentowane zostały efekty analizy porównawczej danych z pomiarów zbieranych klasyczną metodą obserwacji oraz danych z czujników wejść i wyjść do pojazdu, gromadzonych w sposób automatyczny. Dodatkowo przedstawiono wzory na funkcje umożliwiające przeliczenie wyników zebranych w sposób automatyczny na dane rzeczywiste. Analizę podsumowano wykresami regresji liniowej oraz tabelą zgodności wyników pomiarów z automatycznego systemu zliczania pasażerów. W końcowej części artykułu zaprezentowano schemat modelu prognozy popytu na usługi transportowe z zastosowaniem danych z automatycznego systemu zliczania pasażerów. Oceniono przydatność wykorzystywania tego typu danych w celach prognostycznych oraz zaproponowano narzędzia, jakie zostaną zastosowane przy tworzeniu modelu. W pracy przedstawione zostały etapy działań, jakie zostaną podjęte w celu stworzenia modeli prognozy popytu na usługi transportowe. Artykuł zakończono podsumowaniem oraz planem dalszych badań mających na celu rozszerzenie wiedzy na opisywany w referacie temat.

The article is a summary of research conducted at the end of 2017 aimed at verifying the correctness of collected data by an automatic passenger counting system used by the MPK S.A. in Krakow. It is also a first step towards larger studies to develop models for forecasting demand in urban public transport using data from an automated system. The article presents the results of comparative analysis of data from measurements collected using the classical observation method and data from vehicle I/O sensors collected automatically. In addition, there are formulas for functions presented allowing to convert automatically collected results into the real data. The analysis was summarized by linear regression charts and a table of matching measurement results from an automatic passenger counting system. At the end the diagram of the model of demand forecast for transport services using data from an automatic passenger counting system was presented. The usefulness of using this type of data for forecasting purposes has been assessed and the tools that will be used to create the model have been proposed. The article also presents the stages of activities that will be undertaken in order to create the models of demand forecast for transport services. The article was completed with a summary and a plan of further research aimed at increasing knowledge on the topic described in the paper.
