Job satisfaction, defined as an employee s attitude to work, is an issue that has been of interest to many researchers since the 1930s. The factors affecting job satisfaction are both subjective and situational. In addition to working conditions, economic and social aspects of work and the nature of performed tasks, situational factors also include determinants in the area of interpersonal relationships. According to the author of this article, interpersonal relationships are one of the key areas of job satisfaction. The quality of relationships with superiors, staff, students, superiors’ management style and feedback are all factors of great importance especially in the case of job satisfaction among academics. In order to determine which of these factors within the area of interpersonal relationships crucially determine the job satisfaction of the academics of the National Defence University (NDU), a study was conducted by the method of a diagnostic survey using a questionnaire technique. Based on the obtained results, the key factors that determine the job satisfaction of this group of employees were indicated, and the overall level of job satisfaction among the academics of the National Defence University was determined.

Osoba wykonująca pracę naukowo-dydaktyczną na uczelni wyższej jest specyficznym typem pracownika. Z jednej strony jest pedagogiem - prowadzi wykłady; z drugiej jest naukowcem - przeprowadza badania; w końcu jest pracownikiem biurowym - wykonuje prace administracyjne. Ta zróżnicowana natura pracy powoduje specyficzne zapotrzebowanie na przestrzeń, która ma spełnić wszystkie, tak bardzo urozmaicone wymagania. Zarówno w Polsce, jak i na świecie nastąpiły znaczące zmiany w sposobach pracy na uczelniach, lj. trójstopniowy system edukacji i kształcenie ustawiczne, międzynarodowe badania i wymiana kadry. Prócz tego pojawiły się nowe urządzenia usprawniające pracę, umożliwiające kontaktowanie się z pracownikami innych uczelni zarówno krajowych, jak i zagranicznych, zdalne przeprowadzanie badań. W związku z tym, struktura przestrzenna budynków nie zawsze odpowiada obecnym potrzebom i standardom, co powoduje poszukiwanie nowych rozwiązań dla tejże specyficznej przestrzeni. Zwykle sięga się do pomysłów istniejących w świecie biznesu bądź też tworzy hybrydy ze znanych już rodzajów biur. Artykuł przedstawia systematykę istniejących na świecie typów rozwiązań przestrzeni biurowej pracowników naukowo-dydaktycznych uczelni wyższych.

A person who works in a scientific and educational field at the university is a specific type of an employee. On the one hand, that person is an educator (e.g. gives lectures), on the other hand, a scientist (conducts research), and finally heor she is an office worker (carries out administrative work). This diverse nature of work entails a particular need for space, which should satisfy all requirements. Both in Poland and in the world there have been significant changes in the way of work at universities e.g. The Bologna system, lifelong learning, international researches and exchanges of the scientific and educational staff ect. Furthermore, there is new technical equipment which enables contact with scientific and education staff from domestic and foreign universities (e.g. Video conferences), remote testing etc. It accelerates work and makes it easier as well. Therefore, spatial structure of the universities often doesn't correspond to current needs and standards. Wherefore people are looking for new solutions for the specific space. They usually reach for the solutions used in business or create hybrids of the known conceptions. The paper presents an overview of the office workplaces used by scientific and educational staff at universities.
