In the present paper the significance of a soil humus for agriculture and environment with a consideration of a modern approaches in this area is presented. The agricultural significance of the humus is appreciated since a long time but its environmental importance was noticed only in a recent time. It concerns mainly the hopes promised in a sequestration increasing of CO2 by the humus thanks to an increase of its resources or by cultivation of selected plants strongly binding Corg in so called phytoliths. Ecological role of soil humus by sequestration of CO2 consists in usage of additional possibility of limiting of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. It is estimated that global sequestration of carbon in soils is 2.4 g C per m2 annually [20]. Also ecological system of management in agriculture gives much bigger possibilities of CO2 seqestration in soil humus, when compared to the conventional and integrated system [22]. In the paper the optimal conditions accelerating and optimizing the process of humification of organic matter in soil was also characterized. In the third chapter of the paper a short survey and evaluation of balance methods of the soil humus elaborated and used in Europe since 1970's years was presented.

Wraz z rozwojem terenów zurbanizowanych, w tym głównie osiedli domków jednorodzinnych, wzrosło zapotrzebowanie na podłoża ogrodnicze. Jako odzew na zaistniałe zapotrzebowanie, w wielu miejscach Ziemi Lubuskiej i północnej części Dolnego Śląska powstały różnej wielkości kopalnie torfów. Wydobywa się także materiał glebowy z poziomów darniowych i poddarniowych łąk. Dodatkowo materiał o wysokiej zawartości materii organicznej pozyskiwany jest w trakcie prac budowlanych - usuwany z powierzchni gruntu jako nienośny. Obserwowana przy tym już od wielu lat moda na nasadzenia roślin kwasolubnych (drzew i krzewów iglastych, wrzosów i wrzośców, azalii i różaneczników i innych) na obszarach miejskich, powoduje jeszcze większe zintensyfikowanie poszukiwania odpowiednich materiałów. Trend ten zdaje się narastać, stąd też istotną jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie o jakość pozyskiwanych materiałów i skutki tego procesu dla środowiska przyrodniczego opisywanych regionów.

Together with the urban development, one-family-housing estates mainly, there has been an increase in the demand for gardening subsoil. To respond to the arising demand, there has occurred various-sized peat pits in many sites of Lubuskie Region and in the northern part of Lower Silesia. Also turf and sub-turf soil materials are excavated from meadows. Additionally, a material with high organic content is obtained during the construction works, which is removed form the surface of the subsoil as a non-bearing one. The last few years have brought acidophilic plants (coniferous trees, and bushes, heather, rhododendron shrubs and other) into fashion, which has resulted in even more intense search for the appropriate material. The tendency seems to be growing, so it is essential to raise a question of the quality of the obtained material and the environmental consequences of the process for the described regions.
