Level of detail categorization for the application in urban design

Urban planning and urban design involve complex processes that require detailed information about the visual information of a place at various scales. Different graphic tools, such as game engines, are evolving to use urban representation fields. The concept of "level of detail" (LOD) has been used to categorize the level of detail in AEC applications such as BIM and GML for urban representation models. However, there is a need to distinguish between different LOD concepts commonly used in various fields, as these terms have different interpretations and implications. This article presents a novel approach to re-categorizing the level of detail concept in AEC applications, led by the traditional use of LOD and in parallel with urban planning scales. From an urbanist perspective, a four-stage LOD classification framework has been studied: LOD 1000 for urban and neighbourhood scales, LOD 2000 for the plaza and square scales, LOD 3000 for architectural and street scales, and LOD 4000 for protected and private areas.

The paper describes the problems of intentions of the rapid introduction of BIM technologies in the construction industry of Ukraine. The research methodology involves analysis of national building standards, BIM technologies that have already been partially tested and a new logical structure of design processes in the logic of BIM technology in Ukraine. It is proposed to introduce into the design practice a number of actions aimed at harmonizing the key stages of BIM-technologies development with the regulatory framework. The European LOD stages and Ukrainian stages of designing are compared; it is proposed to introduce and gradation enshrine it in state building standards. The correctness problem of competitive tender documentation form for the development of project documentation in Ukraine is highlighted. The issue of the need for a detailed review of European Union standards in terms of national specifics and their gradual implementation in the Ukrainian legal framework was raised. It is proved that the proposed measures will improve the quality of design solutions in terms of economic feasibility and environmental friendliness, and government agencies will be able to qualitatively control all design and construction processes.

W artykule przedstawiono podejście obiektowe do modelowania architektonicznego z chmury punktów. Coraz częściej wykorzystywana technologia BIM pozwala na projektowanie na różnych poziomach szczegółowości. Celem pracy było zbudowanie modelu BIM budynku kamienicy z zewnątrz na różnych poziomach szczegółowości. Opisane przykłady mogą zostać wykorzystane przez inwestora lub zamawiającego do zdefiniowania pożądanego przez niego poziomu szczegółowości (dokładności modelu). Przedstawione podejście może zostać zastosowane do inwentaryzacji budowli, rekonstrukcji obiektów zabytkowych czy modernizacji instalacji technologicznych.

The article presents an object-oriented approach to architectural modeling from a points cloud. Increasingly used BIM technology allows designing at various levels of developement. The purpose of the work was to build a BIM model of a tenement building from outside at various levels of development. The described examples can be used by the investor or the contracting authority to define the desired level of development (model accuracy). The presented approach can be applied to the inventory of buildings, reconstruction of historic buildings or modernization of technological installations.
