Here we describe a new type of environmentally sensitive insulation panels which can be used on exterior wall surfaces to minimize all the negative aspects of existing coating materials by taking advantage of natural rock properties. We investigate the decorative characteristics and insulation performance of this new product, obtained by applying materials from different lithologies to Expanded Polystyrene Surfaces (EPS). First, a mortar with 25% acrylic and 75% sand was applied to the EPS by a stripping method using sand size materials from various lithologies (granite, micaschist, basalt, quartzite, and pumice). To determine the optimum thickness, insulation panels containing plaster of 2, 4, 6, and 8 mm thickness were prepared for each lithology. Their thermal conductivity coefficient, bending and compressive strength were tested. Predictably, thermal conductivity coefficient yielded lowest values in 2 mm panels and highest in 8 mm panels for all lithologies. The bending strength also increased proportionaly with thickness. In the compressive strength tests, the highest values were measured for the 2 mm panels while relatively low values were obtained for the 4, 6 and 8 mm panels, except for the micaschist and basalt-based panels. As a result, basalt and pumice offer superior features in the three measured parameters, so, it is expected that different combinations of these two lithologies would offer positive features. In this context, considering its high fire resistance and low thermal conductivity coefficient perpendicular to the planar surface of muscovites, micaschist is the third lithology that can be utilized with the two materials mentioned above. Compared with previous materials, the products investigated in this study are cost effective because they reduce paint costs, application time and total building load. The geomaterials also have aesthetic appeal.

Content available remote Fault location in the outer sheath of power cables
EN
With the development of power systems in recent years, the total amount of power cables in operation has increased greatly, and there are growing reports of cable failure. Cable failures may be due to various intrinsic or extrinsic factors and can lead to massive economic loss. With regard to high-voltage cables, such as 110 kV power cables, there are very few accurate reports on the actual fault observed. This article first analyses the possible causes of power cable outer sheath failure. It then introduces the bridge and step voltage methods, which are traditionally used for cable fault locating, and describes a new method for accurate fault locating in 110 kV cables, which uses the bridge method to pre-locate the fault and then the step voltage method to accurately determine the precise fault locating. Field testing confirms the applicability of the new method for accurate fault locating in 110 kV power cables. The results shown in this article may provide a good reference for the development of future research in related fields.

The system generally used for the thermal insulation of buildings favours the development of microorganisms on the surface of the elevation. The research described here relates to testing of the sensitivity of plaster layers to fungal and algal infection, and the effectiveness of a biocide depending on its concentration in the tested product, its durability in the packaging with the elapse of time, and the use of the system in natural conditions.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań odporności na grzyby pleśniowe zewnętrznych powłok z farb według normy BS 3900-G6 przywołanej w Decyzji Komisji z dnia 13 sierpnia 2008 r., ustanawiającej ekologiczne kryteria przyznawania wspólnotowego oznakowania ekologicznego farbom i lakierom do wymalowań zewnętrznych. Wyniki te porównano z oceną skuteczności działania biocydów w powłokach uzyskaną w badaniach przeprowadzonych zgodnie z PN-EN 15457.

The results of the resistance for mould fungus of elevation paint covers according to BS 3900-G6 standard were presented in the article. The standard was citing in the Decision of the Comission of 13 August 2008, establishing the ecological criteria for granting the European Community ecological marking for paints and external varnishes. The results were compared with the estimation of biocides activity effectiveness in coatings. This estimation was obtained in the tests carried out according to PN EN 15457 standard.
